Job Overview:

Interns will have the opportunity to gain practical experience and enhance their understanding of international labor issues by working directly with the ILO. The internship is designed to provide exposure to the Better Work program, which aims to improve labor standards and working conditions in the garment sector. Interns will be involved in various tasks that support the Partnerships and Programming team, which is responsible for resource mobilization and donor engagement. The role will require interns to assist in creating communication materials, conducting background research, and analyzing policies related to labor standards and social justice. Interns should expect to dedicate a portion of their time to administrative tasks while also engaging in meaningful projects that contribute to the ILO's mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Supporting the creation of briefing notes, write-ups, and communication materials that articulate Better Work's approaches and practices at the country level.
  • Conducting background research on foundations and other partners to align with the resource mobilization strategy.
  • Assisting country programs in local resource mobilization efforts.
  • Analyzing and reviewing policies and initiatives from Better Work's development partners related to trade, labor standards, and social justice.
  • Developing and executing communication strategies and events aimed at enhancing collaboration with government agencies, employers' organizations, and workers' organizations.
  • Dedicating 10% to 20% of time to administrative tasks to support the team.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet several qualifications to be considered for the internship. These include:
  • Enrollment in a Master's or Doctorate program, or completion of such a program within the past year.
  • A strong command of the English language, both written and oral, is mandatory.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • A willingness to acquire new knowledge and skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Adaptability to a multicultural and multilingual environment is highly valued.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes a Master's degree in fields such as Business Administration, Economics, Public Policy, International Development, Social Policy, or related social sciences. Candidates should have a focus on multilateralism and development, which aligns with the ILO's mission and objectives. The candidate must be currently enrolled in a Master's program or have completed such a program no longer than one year prior to the application date.

Experience:
While prior experience is not strictly required, candidates with experience in multistakeholder engagement, donor relations, strategic partnerships development, results-based management, or external relations will have an advantage. This experience can be gained through previous internships, volunteer work, or academic projects that demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge in these areas.

Languages:
A strong command of the English language is mandatory for this position, as all communication and documentation will be conducted in English. While not mandatory, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the ILO's work in various countries.

Additional Notes:
The internship is expected to last between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of a given month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, which may be supplemented if the intern receives partial funding from another institution. Additionally, interns will receive a contribution towards medical insurance costs. Candidates from non- or under-represented countries may be eligible for financial assistance for travel costs to Geneva.
