Job Overview: The Data Analyst position is a fixed-term limited role located in the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The incumbent will report to the Senior Development Coordination Officer, Strategic Planning and RCO Team Leader. The primary function of the Data Analyst is to interact with various stakeholders, including counterparts, officers, technical staff, and external partners, to develop and implement databases, data collection systems, and data analytics that enhance statistical efficiency and quality. The role requires a strong focus on data engineering and data science, as well as collaboration with UN funds, programs, specialized agencies, consultants, and NGOs to exchange information and best practices. The Data Analyst will be responsible for identifying trends, developing reports and dashboards, documenting methodologies, creating data visualizations, and leading the production of data products. Additionally, the incumbent will conduct training for staff on data analytics and support project execution through robust data analysis, ensuring adherence to work plan objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Data Analyst will perform a comprehensive set of duties, including:
Developing and implementing databases, data collection systems, and analytics strategies to optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
Identifying, analyzing, and interpreting trends or patterns in data using statistical methods.
Creating various analysis, reporting, and quality control capabilities, and identifying new data analysis process improvement opportunities.
Developing reports, dashboards, and tools to summarize findings and convey information effectively to management.
Documenting requirements, background information, and methodologies, and establishing documentation practices for staff.
Creating interactive and static data visualizations to aid decision-making.
Leading the production of data products such as reports or newsletters related to data analysis activities.
Drafting inputs for a wide range of documents, reports, briefings, and correspondence.
Establishing communication and cooperation with other organizational units to request data and express data needs. 1
Collaborating with data engineers and data scientists to improve data flows and quality. 1
Keeping abreast of current trends and developments in data analytics best practices and technologies. 1
Conducting capacity-building activities for staff on data analytics, including training sessions. 1
Supporting project execution by conducting data analysis and collaborating with team members to ensure project objectives are met.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in data analysis, data visualization, and related fields. Demonstrated skills in data storytelling and proficiency in data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, and R are required. Additionally, candidates should have the ability to perform quality assurance of data analysis outputs and assess data accuracy and consistency through validation processes. Knowledge in database management for extracting, transforming, and loading data from various sources is desirable, as is the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, applied mathematics, information management, data management, information systems, information science, or a related quantitative field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates are required to have a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in data analysis and related fields. This experience should demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the position, particularly in data visualization and quality assurance of data outputs. Experience in database management and the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions is also desirable.
Languages: Fluency in both oral and written English and French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding), while 'knowledge of' is rated as 'confident' in two of the four areas.
Additional Notes: This is a fixed-term limited position with an initial appointment period of one (1) year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The position is open to nationals of Cameroon only, and candidates must be recruited within the country or within commuting distance of the office. If no suitable local candidate is identified, Cameroonian nationals residing elsewhere may be considered, with the candidate responsible for any travel and relocation costs.
