Job Overview: The Driver position is located in the Resident Coordinator’s Office in Moroni, Comoros, and reports directly to the Head of the Resident Coordinator’s Office/Team Leader. The primary function of this role is to ensure safe and efficient transportation for authorized personnel and general cargo. The Driver is expected to maintain a high standard of professionalism, demonstrating knowledge of driving regulations and the local area. The role also involves logistical support, such as making deliveries, handling minor purchases, and ensuring the upkeep of the assigned vehicle. The Driver must exhibit good judgment and client orientation, ensuring that the needs of the personnel being transported are met effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Driver will be responsible for the following duties: driving vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel and general cargo; making deliveries of parcels and documents between the office and various institutions; handling minor purchases and collecting urgent items from local suppliers; meeting official personnel at the airport; maintaining effective and tactful communication with officials and visitors; performing day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles, including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and tools; performing minor repairs and arranging for other repairs; ensuring the cleanliness of the vehicle; logging fuel consumption and maintenance; reporting any damage or loss of vehicle tools; ensuring compliance with rules and regulations in case of accidents; applying good judgment in assignments; and performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a valid National Driver's License and a clean driving record. A valid defensive driving certificate is desirable. Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, as well as familiarity with the local area and road conditions, is essential. The candidate should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to gender equality in the workplace. The ability to maintain productive partnerships with clients and anticipate their needs is also crucial.
Educational Background: A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. A relevant first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of required experience. Additionally, a valid basic life support (BLS) certificate or equivalent is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience as a driver with a safe driving record is required. Candidates should have experience driving various makes and models of vehicles, including vans and other motorized vehicles. Experience working with the United Nations or other international organizations is desirable, as is experience in protocol matters, particularly in multilateral settings.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written French is required for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding), while knowledge is defined as a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
Additional Notes: This is a Fixed Term position, open for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval.
