The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is a vital part of the United Nations Secretariat. Established to ensure a coherent response to emergencies, OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors. OCHA operates globally, with a significant presence in various regions, including the Middle East and North Africa, where it has established a regional office in Cairo to promote its mandate and enhance partnerships for humanitarian purposes.

Job Overview:
The intern position is located in the Cairo hub of the OCHA Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA). The role is crucial in supporting the information management team, which is responsible for various tasks related to data management and geospatial analysis. The intern will work under the oversight of the Deputy Head of Office and will be expected to contribute to the team's efforts in achieving its objectives. The position emphasizes the importance of diversity, empathy, and collaboration, encouraging open communication and knowledge sharing among team members. The intern will gain valuable experience in humanitarian response and information management, working closely with professionals in the field.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will support the information management workstream within OCHA ROMENA Cairo by performing a variety of tasks, including:
  • Assisting in the creation and maintenance of reference maps and atlases for Gaza, Libya, and other countries in the region.
  • Processing geospatial data, updating GIS layers, and producing high-quality cartographic outputs.
  • Contributing to the maintenance and updating of OCHA’s geospatial databases and datasets.
  • Supporting the collection, cleaning, and validation of geospatial and non-geospatial datasets from various sources. These responsibilities will provide the intern with hands-on experience in data management and geospatial analysis, essential skills for a career in humanitarian work.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants for the internship program must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: be enrolled in or have recently graduated (within the past 12 months) from a degree program in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Data Science, Information Management, Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related field. While professional working experience is not required, academic and/or practical experience in humanitarian issues and the work of the United Nations is desirable. Additionally, applicants should possess a good command of English and Arabic languages, as well as proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and MS Teams. Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms is also important, along with familiarity in creating interactive dashboards using tools like Power BI or Tableau.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes enrollment in or recent graduation from a relevant degree program. This could include fields such as Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Data Science, Information Management, Computer Science, Statistics, or closely related disciplines. The internship is designed for individuals who are looking to gain practical experience in their field of study, particularly in the context of humanitarian work and data management.

Experience:
While the internship does not require professional working experience, having academic and/or practical experience in humanitarian issues and the work of the United Nations is considered desirable. This means that candidates who have engaged in relevant projects, volunteer work, or internships in related fields will have an advantage in the selection process. The focus is on candidates who are eager to learn and contribute to the organization's mission, even if they do not have extensive prior experience.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) is required for this internship. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is considered an advantage. The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French, but for this specific internship, proficiency in English and Arabic is mandatory. This language requirement is crucial for effective communication within the team and with external partners.
