Job Overview: The Public intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Information Intern will work within the Education Outreach Section (EOS) of the Outreach Division (OD) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). This role is crucial in producing communication materials and organizing educational events that support the United Nations' mandated programs, including the Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, the Outreach Programme on the Holocaust, and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative. The intern will engage in various tasks such as conducting in-depth research on thematic issues, drafting background materials, official letters, and social media content, as well as assisting in event organization and administrative tasks. The internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in a professional setting, allowing the intern to learn about the UN's principles and goals while contributing to meaningful projects.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Chief of Section, including: conducting internet research on thematic issues relevant to the EOS; monitoring inboxes for the programs; providing logistical support for in-person events hosted by the EOS; assisting in the planning and organization of events, which includes researching speakers, preparing invitations, and creating promotional materials; maintaining databases for the EOS section; providing general office support such as processing, drafting, and finalizing correspondence; setting up and maintaining files and records; organizing meetings; and performing other ad hoc tasks as necessary.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, or a related field. While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants should also have good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, and demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background: Candidates should be students in their final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. Additionally, applicants should possess skills in writing, social media, and multimedia production, which are strongly desired for this role.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include internships, volunteer work, or projects related to communication, media, or international relations.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is desirable. The working languages of the UN Secretariat include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish, making proficiency in these languages beneficial for candidates.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid and requires a commitment of at least four months, with the possibility of extension up to six months. Interns are expected to work full-time (35 hours per week) or part-time (less than 34 hours per week) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Interns must provide their own hardware, software, and internet connection if the internship is performed remotely.
