The IEA aims to enhance the contribution of the energy sector to economic development and sustainability, working with both member and non-member countries to address global energy challenges.
Job Overview: The Data Officer position at the IEA Energy Data Centre (EDC) involves the collection, compilation, verification, research, and dissemination of energy data. The selected candidate(s) will engage in activities that support the Agency's work on global energy challenges, including energy security, markets, efficiency, and GHG emissions. The role is integral to the IEA's modernization strategy, emphasizing the use of innovative data sources and methods. Data Officers will contribute to the development of indicators and metrics for tracking energy market developments and will be responsible for maintaining documentation on data series and drafting methodological notes for various publications. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying new data sources and innovative collection methods, ensuring data quality and international comparability.
Duties and Responsibilities: The main responsibilities of the Data Officer include:
Data Collection, Validation, and Development: Collect, review, input, and validate data from various sources; improve methods for data quality; develop methods for estimating missing values; create indicators for tracking energy market developments; identify new data sources and innovative collection methods; maintain documentation on data series; collaborate with international organizations on related topics.
Database Management, Support, Dissemination, and Analysis: Participate in maintaining and developing statistical databases; integrate new data sets into existing infrastructure; provide guidance on data preparation and interpretation; contribute to statistical publications and reports; deliver presentations and training in various settings.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in relevant fields such as statistics, data science, economics, mathematics, computer science, information technology, engineering, physics, or environmental studies. A postgraduate degree in these fields is advantageous. Additionally, candidates should have at least two years of experience in data production or use, with a general knowledge of statistical concepts and applied data analysis techniques. Knowledge and experience in the energy field are significant advantages. Strong communication skills are essential, particularly the ability to present technical content to non-technical audiences.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in fields relevant to energy data, such as statistics, data science, economics, mathematics, computer science, information technology, engineering, physics, or environmental studies. A postgraduate degree in one of these areas would be considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience: Candidates should have at least two years of experience in the production and/or use of data or statistics, which can be gained from the private sector, universities, public research institutes, national administrations, or international organizations. Experience in data processing and analysis using programming languages such as Python, R, and Matlab is essential. Familiarity with business intelligence software like Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or Plotly/Dash is also advantageous. Experience with Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel and Visual Basic, is required, and managing data with SQL is considered a significant advantage for certain positions.
Languages: An excellent command of written and oral English is mandatory, with the ability to draft and proofread documents in English. Knowledge of other OECD languages or additional languages would be beneficial and is considered an advantage for the position.

The salary and conditions will depend on the experience of the selected candidate and their status (temporary staff or official). For temporary staff, the salary starts at 2,830 EUR.
