Its mission is to observe and maintain ceasefires in Palestine and assist in the supervision of the 1949 Armistice Agreements. UNTSO operates in five countries: Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Syrian Arab Republic. Job Overview:
The Chief Security Officer (CSO) is a pivotal role within the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) located in Jerusalem. The CSO is responsible for overseeing all security operations, ensuring the safety of UN personnel and assets, and advising the Head of Mission on security matters. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of security management, particularly in conflict and post-conflict environments. The CSO will coordinate with various UN agencies and local authorities to ensure effective security measures are in place, manage security personnel, and develop training programs to enhance the security capabilities of the mission. The role also involves budget preparation for security operations and integrating security considerations into mission planning and programming.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chief Security Officer will undertake a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: preparing the security component of the mission's budget; recruiting and managing security personnel; advising on safety and security management; conducting threat and risk assessments; overseeing the implementation of security policies; coordinating emergency response systems; ensuring compliance with security standards; maintaining communication with local authorities and international organizations; and conducting investigations related to security incidents. The CSO will also be responsible for training mission staff on security protocols and ensuring that security considerations are integrated into all mission activities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in security management, with a minimum of ten years of relevant professional experience. At least five years should be in a leadership role, demonstrating the ability to manage crisis situations effectively. Knowledge of UN security policies and procedures is essential, along with experience in peacekeeping missions or similar international organizations. Candidates should also have experience in risk management, security planning, and crisis management in conflict environments.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (master's or equivalent) in political/social science, international relations, law enforcement, or business management with a focus on security management is required. A first-level university degree combined with relevant experience may be accepted. Graduates from Police/Military War Colleges and Senior Staff Colleges are also eligible for consideration.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of ten years of relevant experience, including at least four years within the United Nations security management system. Experience in peacekeeping missions or similar international organizations is desirable, as is experience in managing security units in multicultural environments. Candidates should have a proven track record in crisis management and security risk assessments.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as both languages are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
