Job Details
Job Posting Organization: The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Jakarta is part of the global network of UN Information Centres, which operate under the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications. UNICs play a crucial role in disseminating information about the United Nations and its activities, particularly in developing countries. The organization aims to enhance public understanding and support for the UN's goals and initiatives. UNIC Jakarta specifically focuses on promoting the values and impact of the UN in Indonesia, collaborating with various stakeholders including government entities, civil society organizations, and the private sector. The centre is dedicated to providing resources and information to the public, thereby fostering a greater awareness of the UN's work.
Job Overview: The internship at UNIC Jakarta is designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in public information and communications within the context of the United Nations. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member and are expected to contribute to various projects and initiatives that support the UN's mission in Indonesia. The internship is unpaid and requires a commitment of five days a week, totaling 35 hours. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that may include event organization, content development for campaigns, and outreach efforts to promote UN initiatives. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in international relations, communications, and public service, allowing them to gain firsthand experience in a dynamic and impactful environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will have a diverse set of responsibilities that may vary based on their background and the specific office to which they are assigned. Key duties include: assisting in the organization and preparation of events, which may involve logistical planning and creating presentation materials; documenting events through photos and videos; contributing to the content planning and development of inter-agency campaigns, including social media strategies; helping to amplify UN outreach efforts within youth networks and other target demographics; identifying potential supporters for UN initiatives; and maintaining records of communications and outreach activities for internal purposes. Interns may also be required to perform other related duties as assigned by their supervisors.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. The ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is essential, as is a willingness to understand and respect differing opinions and views. The UN encourages applications from individuals from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds.
Educational Background: Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a master's or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree must be provided with the application. This educational background is crucial as it ensures that interns have the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the UN's work.
Experience: No prior work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, candidates should possess relevant training, education, or skills that would benefit the UN during their internship. This opens the opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain valuable experience without the barrier of needing extensive prior work history.
Languages: Fluency in Bahasa or Indonesian and English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of other UN official languages or regional languages spoken in Indonesia is considered desirable, as it can enhance communication and outreach efforts within diverse communities.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Those who are not citizens or permanent residents of Indonesia may need to secure the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. A completed online application, including a Cover Note and Personal History Profile, is required for consideration. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. The Cover Note must detail the applicant's degree program, graduation date, IT skills, areas of interest, and reasons for being a suitable candidate for the internship. Due to the high volume of applications, only successful candidates will be contacted. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
