Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UN Women, established in July 2010, is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. It was created as part of the UN reform agenda to consolidate resources and mandates for greater impact in gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women merges the work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system that focused on gender issues, namely DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW, and UNIFEM. The organization operates globally, with a mission to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, empower women, and achieve equality between women and men. UN Women works in various countries, including Indonesia, where it collaborates with government, civil society, academia, and the private sector to address national priorities related to gender equality and women's empowerment. The organization focuses on key areas such as ending violence against women, women's economic empowerment, and governance, peace, and resilience.

Job Overview:
The Governance, Peace, and Resilience Intern position at UN Women offers a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in research, policy analysis, program coordination, and stakeholder engagement within the Governance, Peace, and Resilience portfolio. The intern will be involved in two significant research assignments that contribute to UN Women’s broader normative and programmatic work. The first assignment focuses on the finalization of the National Gender Machinery of the Republic of Indonesia document, which includes mapping institutional roles, policies, and partners across key thematic areas. The second assignment examines national models for engaging men and boys in gender equality, analyzing programmatic approaches, training modules, and intervention strategies developed by organizations working on positive masculinities and male engagement. This internship aims to provide the selected candidate with a deeper understanding of UN Women’s programmatic approaches, gender-responsive governance mechanisms, and national gender equality efforts in Indonesia. The intern is expected to adopt a client-oriented approach and contribute effectively to the work of UN Women’s program teams.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive desk reviews based on CEDAW Concluding Observations, Indonesia’s BPfA+30 National Review, and relevant national policy frameworks.
  • Map lead ministries and institutions across thematic areas, including their internal gender mechanisms such as gender focal points, working groups, or task forces.
  • Identify and compile key policies, strategies, programs, and budget allocations related to gender equality.
  • Map key partners, including government institutions, civil society organizations, academia, private sector actors, and subnational stakeholders.
  • Verify the accuracy of policy and institutional references, including Presidential and Ministerial regulations, and coordinate with relevant government counterparts when necessary.
  • Analyze approaches and interventions designed to engage men and boys in gender equality, reviewing training modules, curricula, and programmatic models developed by organizations working on male engagement and positive masculinities in Indonesia.
  • Identify promising practices, gaps, and opportunities for strengthening male engagement in future programming.
  • Support the identification of potential intervention pathways for collaboration with law enforcement institutions.
  • Assist with general administrative assignments and logistical requirements as needed. 1
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to review policy documents and synthesize complex information. They should demonstrate the ability to conduct institutional and stakeholder mapping with accuracy and attention to detail. Good organizational skills are essential, including maintaining databases, tracking information, and managing multiple tasks effectively. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required for preparing briefs, summaries, and program documentation. The ability to support coordination of meetings, consultations, and validation processes with diverse stakeholders is also necessary. Candidates should have the capacity to work with data, policies, and legal references in a systematic and methodical manner, and be able to work collaboratively in a multicultural team while contributing to knowledge-sharing. A client-oriented and service-focused approach in program and administrative support is expected.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have university studies in one of the following disciplines: gender studies, public policy, political science, international relations, sociology, law, development studies, social sciences, or other relevant subjects. They must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a two-year period of graduation; or be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree program and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have relevant experience that demonstrates their ability to conduct research and analysis effectively. While specific years of experience may not be mandated, candidates should showcase their familiarity with gender issues, policy analysis, and program coordination through academic projects, internships, or volunteer work. Experience in working within multicultural environments or with international organizations is advantageous.

Languages:
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required for this position. A working knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, as it may enhance the intern's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to UN Women’s mission effectively.

Additional Notes:
The internship is designed to provide a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize the intern's basic living costs for the duration of the internship, especially for those who are not receiving financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions. The position is likely to be part-time or full-time, depending on the intern's availability and UN Women's needs. The organization is committed to diversity and inclusion, ensuring that all employment decisions are based on qualifications, competence, integrity, and organizational need. UN Women has a zero-tolerance policy on conduct that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and UN Women, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, abuse of authority, and discrimination.
