Job Overview:
The Driver position at UNFPA is crucial for providing reliable and safe transportation services to the team in Niassa, Mozambique. The role requires a high level of discretion, integrity, and responsibility, as the driver will be responsible for transporting UNFPA staff, officials, and visitors, as well as handling mail and documentation deliveries. The driver must maintain a client-oriented approach, demonstrating courtesy and tact while working with individuals from diverse national and cultural backgrounds. The position also involves managing vehicle maintenance, ensuring safety and compliance with traffic regulations, and assisting with administrative duties as needed. The driver will report directly to the Programme Specialist in Niassa, contributing to the overall mission of UNFPA in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Providing reliable and safe driving services, including transporting UNFPA staff, officials, and visitors, and managing the delivery and collection of mail and documentation.
  • Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, managing visa and customs formalities when required.
  • Keeping abreast of traffic, road, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security issues to ensure safe and timely arrivals for meetings.
  • Managing all aspects of vehicle maintenance, including conducting minor repairs, cleaning, and arranging for major repairs and services to keep the vehicle in good running condition.
  • Keeping daily vehicle logs and assisting in the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and history reports.
  • Keeping track of insurance and tax formalities for the vehicle.
  • Acting as a translator in the local language for official passengers when necessary.
  • Assisting Country Office staff with general administrative duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires the following qualifications:
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • A minimum of three years of work experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy, or UN system, with a proven safe driving record.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol and courtesies, local roads and conditions, and defensive driving skills.
  • Skills in minor vehicle repairs are also necessary.
  • The candidate should exemplify integrity, demonstrate commitment to UNFPA and the UN system, embrace cultural diversity, and be adaptable to change.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed Secondary Level Education. This educational background is essential to ensure that the driver possesses the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties effectively and safely.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least three years of relevant experience as a driver, particularly in an international context such as working with UN agencies, embassies, or similar organizations. This experience should include a strong record of safe driving and familiarity with the local driving environment and regulations.

Languages:
A basic knowledge of the official UN language of the duty station is mandatory. Additionally, knowledge of the local language is desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local officials and enhance the driver's ability to assist passengers effectively.
