Job Overview:
The GIS Specialist position is a critical role within the UNDP, focusing on the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support various projects, particularly in natural resource management and community development. The specialist will be responsible for conducting GIS analysis and mapping, utilizing advanced GIS software tools such as ArcGIS and QGIS. The role requires a deep understanding of spatial analysis techniques and the ability to interpret complex spatial data. The consultant will work closely with local communities, employing participatory mapping methodologies to ensure that the needs and knowledge of the community are integrated into the project outcomes. The assignment is expected to span 15 days over a period of three months, allowing for flexibility in scheduling while ensuring that project milestones are met.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The GIS Specialist will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: conducting GIS analysis and producing detailed maps for project stakeholders; collaborating with community members to gather spatial data and insights; applying participatory mapping techniques to engage local populations; interpreting and analyzing spatial data to inform project decisions; preparing reports and presentations that communicate findings effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences; ensuring that all GIS data is accurately documented and stored; providing training and support to project staff and community members on GIS tools and methodologies; and staying updated on the latest GIS technologies and best practices to enhance project outcomes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in geography, environmental science, geomatics, urban planning, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of five years of relevant experience in GIS analysis and mapping is required, with a preference for experience in projects related to natural resource management or community development. Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS and QGIS is essential, along with strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Familiarity with participatory mapping methodologies and community-based research approaches is highly desirable. Understanding Indigenous knowledge systems and issues related to land tenure and resource management is considered an advantage.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as geography, environmental science, geomatics, or urban planning. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of GIS and its application in real-world scenarios, particularly in relation to community development and natural resource management.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of professional experience in GIS analysis and mapping. This experience should ideally include work on projects that focus on natural resource management or community development, demonstrating the candidate's ability to apply GIS tools effectively in these contexts. Candidates should have a proven track record of utilizing GIS software and conducting spatial analysis, as well as experience in engaging with communities to gather and interpret spatial data.

Languages:
