Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP was established in April 2012, and it oversees the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), which has a membership of over 150 Governments. The organization aims to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services, thereby enhancing global environmental governance.

Job Overview:
The Consultant for IPBES Stakeholder Engagement will play a crucial role in enhancing the implementation of the IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Strategy. This position requires the individual to work closely with the IPBES Head of Communications and the Stakeholder Engagement Officer to strategically plan, organize, and oversee the operationalization of stakeholder days in advance of the sessions of the IPBES Plenary. The consultant will be responsible for managing logistical arrangements for these events, which include both in-person and online participation. The role also involves expanding stakeholder engagement across various geographical and disciplinary areas, improving communication with stakeholders, and ensuring that the IPBES effectively reaches diverse audiences. The consultant will be expected to deepen and assess the implementation of the Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, focusing on enhancing the understanding of the stakeholder landscape and increasing the effectiveness of stakeholder contributions across all IPBES functions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Consultant include:
  • Strategically planning and managing logistical arrangements for stakeholder days, including project team collaboration, agenda-setting, outreach, and event management.
  • Overseeing in-person management of stakeholder day event logistics, including poster sessions, speaker management, and liaison with technical teams and local partners.
  • Identifying and expanding relevant stakeholder networks for each Plenary session, focusing on local and regional engagement.
  • Conducting expanded dialogue with organized IPBES stakeholder groups through quarterly meetings and collaboration on stakeholder days.
  • Deploying, analyzing, and reporting on comprehensive periodic stakeholder surveys.
  • Collaborating with the communications team to craft and monitor social media posts and improve online content related to stakeholder engagement.
  • Producing creative content for IPBES social and online media.
  • Planning outreach events with underserved and underrepresented stakeholder communities.
  • Co-creating targeted audio and visual materials to promote engagement opportunities. 1
  • Acting as the stakeholder engagement focal point for IPBES dialogues and webinars, reporting on all related events. 1
  • Maintaining and improving the TRACK Impact Tracking Database. 1
  • Facilitating new engagement opportunities for published IPBES Assessment Reports. 1
  • Strengthening collaboration with Technical Support Units to mobilize stakeholder engagement across the IPBES work programme.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for this position include:
  • A university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, environmental studies, public policy, public administration, law, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in stakeholder engagement, project management, event management, network-building, or communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to write clear and concise drafts in English.
  • Strong organizational and personal management skills, with the ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with environmental issues and knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity, and environment-related matters is desirable.
  • Experience in an international organization or intergovernmental context, especially within the United Nations, is also desirable.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a university degree, specifically a Master's degree or equivalent, in fields such as communication, environmental studies, public policy, public administration, law, or related areas. In cases where candidates hold a first-level university degree, they may still qualify if they have relevant qualifying experience that compensates for the lack of an advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in relevant fields such as stakeholder engagement, project management, event management, network-building, or communications. This experience should ideally include work within international organizations or intergovernmental contexts, particularly in relation to environmental issues and the operations of the United Nations.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in any other official United Nations languages, particularly French, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.

Additional Notes:
The position is office-based and is expected to last for a duration of 12 months. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, including application, interview, or training. Additionally, the organization does not request information regarding applicants' bank accounts.
