Job Overview: The Technical Advisor on Forests, Carbon Markets and RBF will be responsible for delivering high-quality technical assistance related to forest carbon markets and REDD+ results-based finance (RBF) to stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region. This position is part of the UN-REDD Programme, which is a collaborative initiative involving UNEP, UNDP, and FAO aimed at enhancing commitments to climate action through forest protection and restoration. The advisor will work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies and UN partners, to ensure that the needs of partner countries are met while considering the latest developments in RBF globally. The role requires a deep understanding of forest carbon markets and the ability to provide strategic policy guidance to enhance the effectiveness of these markets in the region. The advisor will also be involved in knowledge generation and capacity building efforts to support stakeholders in engaging with forest carbon markets and accessing innovative finance.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Technical Advisor will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Providing high-quality technical and policy advisory services on Forest Carbon Markets and REDD+ RBF to Asia Pacific countries, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nepal, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam.
Expanding strategic initiatives and partnerships related to forests, carbon markets, and RBF.
Conducting knowledge generation activities on forests, carbon markets, and RBF.
Offering strategic policy guidance on the design and implementation of forest carbon markets and RBF, considering national policy targets, legal frameworks, and monitoring requirements.
Identifying capacity gaps and proposing solutions to enhance stakeholder engagement in forest carbon markets.
Advising UNEP staff and senior management on regional trends and issues related to Forest Carbon Markets and REDD+ RBF.
Contributing to work plans, progress reports, and monitoring reports related to the UN-REDD Technical Assistance in the Asia Pacific region.
Establishing strategic partnerships with NGOs, the private sector, and scientific institutions to enhance engagement in forest carbon markets.
Preparing technical concept notes and presentations to address country needs. 1
Participating in retreats and regional planning activities to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in forestry, conservation sciences, development planning, or related fields. Additional professional academic certifications in REDD+ or Carbon Forestry are preferred. Proven expertise in international climate policies, REDD+, forest carbon market standards, and carbon accounting methodologies is essential. Strong analytical and research skills are required, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders. A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in REDD+, forest carbon projects, climate change mitigation, and forest carbon market development is mandatory.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in fields such as forestry, conservation sciences, or development planning. Candidates with a mix of professional academic qualifications will be considered an asset. Additional certifications in REDD+ or Carbon Forestry will enhance a candidate's profile and are preferred for this role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in areas such as REDD+, forest carbon projects, climate change mitigation, and forest carbon market development. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in the Asia and Pacific region, demonstrating familiarity with regional contexts and challenges. Experience in providing technical and policy advisory services related to forest carbon markets and RBF is crucial for success in this role.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Candidates should possess strong communication skills to effectively convey complex information and engage with various stakeholders.
