Job Posting Organization: The internship is offered by the Social Development Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). ESCAP was established in 1947 and is one of the regional commissions of the United Nations. Its mission is to promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region. The organization operates in 62 member states and 9 associate members, focusing on various thematic areas including gender equality, social protection, and sustainable development. ESCAP employs a diverse workforce of over 300 staff members from various countries, contributing to its mission of fostering regional cooperation and integration.
Job Overview: The internship in the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS) of the Social Development Division is designed for individuals who are passionate about gender equality and women's empowerment. The intern will support the communications work related to these themes, which are central to ESCAP's mission. The internship is expected to last between 3 to 6 months, with a preference for part of the internship to be conducted onsite in Bangkok. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that will enhance their understanding of the United Nations' work in gender equality and social inclusion, while also providing them with practical experience in communications and event organization. The role is full-time, requiring interns to work five days a week, totaling 37.5 hours, under the supervision of a staff member in the GESIS.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of duties that may include: drafting content for public information materials such as social media posts, website content, news stories, and blogs; producing multimedia materials including infographics, presentation slides, event flyers, backdrops, banners, and short videos; coordinating internal communications with ESCAP's gender focal point network and participating in various United Nations system-wide focal point meetings; conducting research and compiling information for reports; assisting in organizing and convening events such as commemorations, meetings, seminars, and workshops; providing photography and video coverage as needed; and performing other duties as assigned by the Chief of Section. The internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to contribute actively to the team's objectives while gaining valuable experience in the field.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, applicants should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate different opinions and views.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or being in the final year of a bachelor's degree program. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of gender equality and social inclusion issues, as well as for effectively contributing to the communications work of the GESIS.
Experience: While no prior working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme, having experience in research and writing, organizing workshops and meetings, or working on issues related to gender equality and women's empowerment will be considered an asset. This experience can help interns to better understand the context of their work and contribute more effectively to the team's goals.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language or another language from the Asia-Pacific region is considered an asset, enhancing the intern's ability to communicate and collaborate in a diverse environment.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. A completed online application, including a Cover Note and Candidate Profile, is required for consideration. The Cover Note must detail the title of the degree being pursued, graduation date, availability for the internship, IT skills, areas of interest, and reasons for being the best candidate for the internship. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further consideration. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
