The Statistics Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is dedicated to enhancing the quality and availability of statistical data in the Asia-Pacific region. Established to support the region's development goals, ESCAP works with member states and various organizations to implement programs that build statistical capacity and improve data collection and analysis. The division operates under the guidance of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and collaborates with national statistical offices and international organizations to fulfill its mandates, which are derived from General Assembly and ECOSOC resolutions. The division is committed to promoting the use of statistics for informed decision-making and sustainable development across the region.

Job Overview:
The internship within the Statistics Division is designed for individuals seeking to gain practical experience in the field of statistics and data analysis. This full-time, unpaid internship lasts a minimum of three months, with the possibility of extension up to six months based on the division's needs. Interns will work closely with experienced staff members, contributing to various projects that support the dissemination and analysis of statistical data related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Interns will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful work that directly impacts the region's statistical capabilities and supports the monitoring of progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The role requires a commitment of five days per week, totaling 35 hours, and offers a unique chance to learn about the operations of a major international organization while developing valuable skills in data management and analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be involved in a variety of tasks that support the work of the Statistics Division. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the dissemination of the SDG progress report through the ESCAP website and utilizing AI tools to enhance user engagement.
  • Supporting the visualization and communication of SDG data analysis, ensuring that information is accessible and user-friendly.
  • Aiding the Statistical Data Management Unit (SDMU) in improving data management practices and applying statistical techniques for SDG data analysis.
  • Performing additional tasks as assigned, which may vary based on the intern's background and the specific needs of the division. Deliverables expected from the intern include exploring AI applications for enhancing user experience with the SDG report, supporting the communication of flagship publications, improving data management procedures, drafting research papers and technical notes, and participating in relevant meetings.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in standard software applications is essential, as interns will be expected to utilize various tools for data analysis and reporting. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment are also important for success in this role.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as statistics, mathematics, or engineering is required for this internship. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding statistical concepts and methodologies, which are crucial for the tasks assigned during the internship.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory for this internship, any relevant experience in data analysis, statistics, or research will be considered an asset. Interns should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as all communication and documentation will be conducted in English. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's profile.
