The position is located within the Human Rights Inquiries Branch/Investigation Support Section at the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Juba. The OHCHR is dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights globally, providing guidance and support to various countries in their efforts to uphold human rights standards. The organization works with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders to ensure accountability for human rights violations and to promote justice and reconciliation. Job Overview:
The Transitional Justice Adviser will play a crucial role in coordinating the Commission's program related to transitional justice and accountability processes in South Sudan. This includes providing advice and guidance on gender-sensitive approaches to truth-seeking initiatives, reparations, and institutional reforms. The adviser will assist the Commission in making recommendations to the Government of South Sudan regarding technical assistance and capacity building to promote accountability for human rights violations. The role requires conducting legal analysis and research on transitional justice issues, drafting legal opinions, and ensuring the legal accuracy of documents prepared by the Secretariat. The adviser will also be responsible for identifying trends in human rights violations and ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into the legal analysis and findings.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Transitional Justice Adviser include coordinating the Commission's tasks related to transitional justice, advising on applicable legal frameworks, conducting analysis and research on legal matters, drafting investigation plans, and formulating recommendations for evidence collection. The adviser will also provide legal advice on various issues, ensure the legal accuracy of documents, identify patterns of human rights violations, and conduct information gathering activities. Additionally, the adviser will be responsible for integrating gender perspectives into the legal analysis and advising the Coordinator and team on legal findings related to transitional justice and accountability. Other duties may be assigned as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">international law, particularly in the context of human rights and transitional justice. They should have the ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide sound legal advice. The role requires excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. A commitment to gender equality and the ability to incorporate gender perspectives into legal analysis is essential. The adviser should also demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and effective planning and organizing skills.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law or a related discipline is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in the aforementioned areas combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of human rights law and transitional justice.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible work experience in human rights is required, with at least two years of experience specifically in providing advice on transitional justice or international human rights law. Relevant professional experience focused on legal issues in the area of human rights law or transitional justice is desirable. Experience working in or on South Sudan is also considered an asset, as it provides valuable context for the role.

Languages:
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, as it may enhance communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
