UNMISS aims to prevent a return to civil war, build durable peace, and support inclusive governance and free elections. The mission has a significant presence with a ceiling of 17,000 troops and over 2,100 police personnel, including corrections officers, and operates in a challenging environment to fulfill its objectives.
Job Overview: The HVAC Technician position is crucial for maintaining the operational integrity of the Torit Field Office within the UNMISS framework. The incumbent will be responsible for all HVAC-related activities, ensuring that heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are installed, maintained, and repaired according to international safety and environmental standards. This role requires a proactive approach to managing HVAC systems, including emergency maintenance and scheduled services, while also providing technical support and training to national staff. The technician will work closely with the Field Engineer and will be expected to contribute to the overall mission by ensuring that all HVAC systems function efficiently and effectively, thereby supporting the mission's broader objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The HVAC Technician will perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to: installing, maintaining, servicing, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration systems; conducting emergency maintenance services; ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards; managing facilities maintenance service contracts; interpreting and creating HVAC and electrical drawings; conducting low voltage electrical installations; maintaining inventory of tools and spare parts; providing technical advice on HVAC systems; assisting in data entry for asset control; conducting capacity building for national staff; performing inventory checks; submitting regular reports; designing and implementing HVAC projects; and adhering to UN protocols on environmental health and safety.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate integrity and professionalism, with a strong commitment to accountability and continuous learning. They should possess effective organizational and problem-solving skills, be able to manage multiple projects under pressure, and work collaboratively in a diverse environment. Strong communication skills are essential, as is the ability to operate independently in challenging conditions. A genuine commitment to the principles of voluntary engagement and UN core values is also required.
Educational Background: A relevant technical diploma or certification in HVAC technology or a related field is required. Additional training in electrical systems or refrigeration is advantageous. Candidates should have a solid understanding of international codes and regulations related to HVAC systems.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair. Experience working in a multicultural environment, particularly in challenging or austere conditions, is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN operations or similar international organizations is a plus.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in South Sudan is an asset and may enhance communication with local staff and communities.
