Job Overview:
The Executive Secretary of the UNCCD plays a crucial role in leading the organization and overseeing its operations. This position requires a visionary leader who can effectively manage the Secretariat and coordinate the implementation of the Convention's objectives. The Executive Secretary will be responsible for providing strategic direction, fostering partnerships, and ensuring that the UNCCD remains relevant in addressing global challenges related to land degradation and desertification. The role involves engaging with member states, stakeholders, and the international community to advocate for policies and initiatives that support sustainable land management practices. Additionally, the Executive Secretary will oversee the preparation of reports, policy documents, and other materials that communicate the organization's goals and achievements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the UNCCD Secretariat, ensuring alignment with the Convention's objectives and priorities.
  • Represent the UNCCD at international forums, conferences, and meetings, advocating for the importance of combating desertification and promoting sustainable land management.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of work plans, budgets, and programs that support the Convention's goals.
  • Foster partnerships with governments, NGOs, and the private sector to enhance collaboration and resource mobilization for UNCCD initiatives.
  • Oversee the preparation of reports, policy documents, and communication materials that highlight the organization's work and impact.
  • Manage the Secretariat's staff, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration within the Secretariat and with external stakeholders.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the Convention's programs and initiatives, providing recommendations for improvement.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in senior management roles within international organizations, preferably in the field of environmental management or sustainable development.
  • Strong understanding of the issues related to desertification, land degradation, and climate change.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with high-level stakeholders, including government officials, civil society, and the private sector.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative solutions to complex challenges.

Educational Background:
A master's degree or higher in environmental science, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is highly desirable and will be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in international development, environmental management, or related fields is required. Experience in a leadership role within a multilateral organization is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in other UN languages, particularly French or Spanish, is an asset and will be considered a plus.
