Job Overview:
The Markets and Trade Analyst position is integral to the FEWS NET (Famine Early Warning Systems Network) initiative, which provides critical analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security analysis, early warning, and decision support for emergency food assistance. The analyst will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing market trends related to staple foods, cash crops, livestock, and labor, among others. This role involves preparing technical reports, contributing to the oversight of analytical approaches, and maintaining a comprehensive database of price and economic indicators. The analyst will work closely with various technical teams to ensure the timely delivery of market and trade analysis that supports food security early warning systems across multiple countries. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying emerging market crises and adapting work plans accordingly, ensuring that the organization meets its commitments to USAID and other stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties of the Markets and Trade Analyst include:
  • Conducting M&T-related analysis to support food security early warning systems across FEWS NET's operational countries.
  • Preparing and providing technical oversight for M&T-focused reports and decision-support products.
  • Maintaining and expanding FEWS NET's datasets for market and trade analysis, focusing on prices, exchange rates, and production data.
  • Analyzing primary and secondary market data to inform integrated food security analysis.
  • Following and analyzing commodity trade flow data and forecasts.
  • Developing analytical tools relevant to the sector and training technical staff on their use.
  • Supporting quality control for M&T deliverables and ensuring timely delivery of products.
  • Liaising with various stakeholders to facilitate data flows and improve data quality.
  • Participating in regular reviews of price projections and M&T-related forecasting. 1
  • Conducting literature reviews and drafting reports on market trends and policies. 1
  • Collaborating with research institutions to support market-related research. 1
  • Assisting in the collection, organization, and storage of data for submission to the FEWS NET Hub and USAID. 1
  • Contributing to decision support efforts to identify potential market crises.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of relevant experience in food security information systems, food security analysis, or early warning systems. Experience working with UN agencies or NGOs is desirable. A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as economics, agricultural economics, agronomy, nutrition, climatology, anthropology, or social geography is required. Candidates must demonstrate strong analytical skills, particularly in market analysis, and have experience in building and using large databases. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams are essential. Familiarity with statistical software and GIS mapping tools is a plus, as is previous experience with USAID-funded activities.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree (or equivalent work experience) in a relevant field is required. This could include disciplines such as economics, agricultural economics, agronomy, nutrition, climatology, anthropology, or social geography. Advanced degrees may be preferred but are not mandatory.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience, particularly in areas related to food security analysis, early warning systems, or market analysis. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of food security, is highly desirable. Candidates should have a proven track record of analyzing complex data sets and providing actionable insights based on their findings.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages such as French, Spanish, or Arabic is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's suitability for the role.
