Job Overview:
This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in the field of information systems within the Office of the Assistant-General for Human Resources (OASG OHR) at the United Nations. The intern will work closely with the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary-General or the Human Resources Officer, contributing to various projects related to the design, development, and maintenance of information systems. The role is full-time and in-person, with a flexible duration of six months. Interns will gain valuable insights into the operations of the UN and the importance of information systems in supporting human resources functions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks, including:
  • Participating in the preparation of user requirements and technical specifications for information systems.
  • Assisting in the design, development, and installation of information systems.
  • Conducting analysis of defined modules within the system and developing enhancements and new features.
  • Designing and implementing small, stand-alone systems as needed to meet specific user requirements.
  • Undertaking rigorous testing and validation of application software.
  • Maintaining assigned portions of systems and providing operational support for system applications.
  • Analyzing and implementing system changes and upgrades.
  • Writing and developing programs to interface with existing systems.
  • Ensuring data security and integrity throughout the system. 1
  • Preparing, updating, and maintaining system documentation and related technical/procedural manuals. 1
  • Assisting in the setup and monitoring of software performance measures.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). A background or exposure to human resources, public administration, or related issues is desirable. Additionally, applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Excel, and MS Teams.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. Educational qualifications should be closely related to the internship's focus area, and exposure to human resources or public administration is preferred.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include projects, research, or other academic work related to information systems or human resources.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of French is desirable, and familiarity with an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage.

This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. For non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents, obtaining a G-4 visa is mandatory for full-time internships. Interns on non-immigrant student visas (F-1 or J-1) may only intern part-time.
