Job Overview:
The Language Officer (Translator/Reviser) will be a key member of the Languages, Publications and Conference Management (LPC) team within the Bureau of Administration and Services (ADB). This role involves providing high-quality translations from English into Arabic and occasionally from Arabic into English, ensuring that all translations are accurate, stylistically appropriate, and meet the needs of the intended audience. The incumbent will apply their linguistic skills to produce translations of technical, legal, and administrative texts, while also revising the work of other translators to maintain high standards of quality. The position requires a proactive approach to terminological research and collaboration with subject matter experts to develop new terminology where necessary. The Language Officer will also contribute to the development of guidelines and standards for translation practices, ensuring consistency and quality across all language services provided by ICAO.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Translate a wide range of texts, ensuring accuracy and completeness in the target language, while using appropriate vocabulary and terminology.
  • Conduct terminological research and clarify meanings of terms with the text originator, ensuring consistency and cross-cultural equivalence.
  • Ensure the quality of translations by proofreading and making necessary changes, while communicating with originators to confirm the accuracy of the message conveyed.
  • Self-revise and revise texts translated by others, ensuring high linguistic quality and addressing any inconsistencies or errors.
  • Provide guidance and training to new colleagues, perform interpretation when required, and participate in professional symposiums and seminars.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions for translators and act as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Section Chief.

Required Qualifications:
  • A first-level degree from a university or equivalent institution, preferably with a focus on translation, languages, or international studies.
  • Seven or more years of professional experience in translating from English to Arabic, particularly in technical or legal contexts.
  • Experience in revising the work of other translators is essential.
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted translation tools and a strong command of both Arabic and English are required.
  • Desirable qualifications include successful completion of the United Nations exam for translators and training in conference interpreting.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree or equivalent, ideally with an emphasis on translation or languages. Additional qualifications such as a successful completion of the United Nations exam for translators are desirable.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of professional experience in translation, specifically from English to Arabic, with a focus on complex technical or legal texts. Experience in revising translations and working in international organizations or large-scale private organizations is preferred. Training or experience in conference interpreting is also desirable.

Languages:
A complete command of Arabic as the mother tongue or the language used for education is essential, along with excellent knowledge of English. A very good command of one of the other official languages of the Organization is considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is fixed-term for an initial period of three years, with the first year being probationary for external candidates. ICAO staff members are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the Standards of Conduct for the International Civil Service.
