The SSS is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of personnel and property at the Vienna International Centre (VIC). Job Overview: The Security Officer will perform armed security functions and is expected to ensure the safety and security of the Vienna International Centre (VIC). This includes screening personnel, packages, and vehicles entering the VIC, operating security systems, and implementing security policies and procedures. The officer will also provide information and directions to individuals associated with VIC-based organizations, respond to security breaches, control traffic, and ensure compliance with security regulations. The role requires a proactive approach to emergency response and the ability to maintain high standards of professionalism and efficiency in all duties. The Security Officer will work under the command of the Chief of Service and report to the respective Security Sergeant or supervising officer in their assigned area.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Security Officer's duties include:
Screening all personnel, packages, and vehicles entering the VIC to ensure authorized access.
Operating physical and electronic security systems and communications systems.
Implementing SSS Vienna policies, Standard Operational Procedures, and post-specific orders.
Providing information and directions to individuals associated with VIC-based organizations.
Responding to potential or actual breaches of security and reporting these incidents immediately.
Controlling pedestrian and vehicular traffic and enforcing VIC traffic rules.
Ensuring that UN property being carried from the VIC is checked for appropriate documentation.
Providing security coverage for UN conferences and special events.
Preparing routine periodic reports and initial incident reports. 1
Maintaining UN firearms qualification standards. 1
Performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with additional security, police, or military training. Candidates must pass the Security Officer test (SOT) as a prerequisite for recruitment consideration. Relevant training in security, police, or military is also required. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of United Nations Security policies and procedures and possess sound judgment in applying these policies to resolve protection issues. Professionalism, teamwork, and client orientation are essential competencies for this role.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Additional training in security, police, or military fields is required to ensure that the candidate is adequately prepared for the responsibilities of the position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of security operations within the United Nations framework.
Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in security, civilian police service, military, or corporate security is required. Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
