Job Overview:
The Security Officer position is crucial for maintaining the safety and security of the United Nations complex in Bangkok. The incumbent will be responsible for performing armed security functions under the direct supervision of the Security Sergeant and overall supervision of the Chief of Security and Safety Section. The role involves screening personnel, packages, and vehicles entering the UN complex, providing continuous coverage of security systems, and responding to emergencies by alerting relevant units and dispatching security personnel. The Security Officer will also maintain logs, prepare work schedules, and provide information and directions to individuals associated with the organization. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying potential security breaches and disturbances, ensuring that all UN property is checked for appropriate documentation, and performing other related duties as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Security Officer include:
  • Screening all personnel, packages, and vehicles entering the UN complex to ensure authorized access.
  • Providing continuous monitoring of security systems, including cameras and communication systems.
  • Responding to emergencies by alerting relevant units and dispatching security personnel as directed.
  • Maintaining logs and rosters, and initiating chronological logs of events during emergencies.
  • Preparing daily and weekly work schedules and various periodic reports.
  • Providing information and directions to all individuals associated with the organization.
  • Controlling pedestrian and vehicular traffic within the UN complex.
  • Being vigilant for any potential or actual breaches of security and reporting disturbances or unusual activities immediately.
  • Ensuring that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation. 1
  • Performing other related duties as required, including standing posts and conducting patrols.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. A valid driving license is also mandatory. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of United Nations Security policies, procedures, and practices, along with sound judgment in applying technical expertise. Professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment are essential. The candidate should also show commitment to gender equality and the equal participation of women and men in all aspects of work.

Educational Background:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. This educational background ensures that the candidate possesses the necessary foundational knowledge and skills to perform the duties effectively.

Experience:
Candidates must have a minimum of three years of experience in military, police, or security services within the United Nations Common System. Additionally, at least two years of experience with security operations/services in the United Nations Security and Safety Service is desirable. This level of experience is crucial for understanding the complexities of security management in a UN context and for effectively responding to various security challenges.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a diverse work environment.
