Job Overview: The Natural Sciences Expert will operate under the authority of the director-general" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences and will be responsible for coordinating the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education and Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) applications for natural resources management. This role is crucial for contributing to the Africa Union Agenda 2063 and involves working closely with various divisions within UNESCO to implement the organization's Medium-Term Strategy and approved Programme and Budget. The incumbent will serve as the focal point for Natural Sciences, ensuring that interdisciplinary activities are formulated and that Member States receive the necessary support for developing natural science programs. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying improvements in scientific systems and fostering cooperation among various stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will represent the Natural Sciences Sector in UNESCO's contributions to STEM education and STI applications, develop and implement program activities, work plans, and funding proposals. Responsibilities include overseeing agreements and contracts, advising peers and governments on policy formulation, strengthening networks, facilitating communication among stakeholders, and mobilizing extra-budgetary resources. The role also involves supervising project consultants and experts, preparing scientific materials, and monitoring and evaluating project outcomes. The expert will be expected to engage with donors and develop strategies for funding and communication within the SC program.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Natural Sciences or Engineering. A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in the natural sciences field is required, with at least two years at the international level. Proven experience in international scientific cooperation, program development, and resource mobilization is essential. Candidates should also have excellent communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a strong understanding of new concepts in natural sciences.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in fields such as Environment, Ecology, Hydrology, Earth Sciences, or Basic Sciences is required. A PhD in Natural Sciences or a related field is desirable and may enhance a candidate's profile.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience, with a preference for candidates who have two years of experience at the international level. Experience in organizing international workshops and events, as well as familiarity with the UN system, is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a history of establishing professional networks and promoting South-South cooperation in capacity building.
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken) is mandatory, along with good knowledge of French. Knowledge of other UNESCO official languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish is considered an asset.
Additional Notes: The position is a fixed-term contract for a duration of two years, with the possibility of renewal. The role is open to both internal and external candidates. The approximate annual starting salary is 104,264 USD, and benefits may include 30 days of annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, and a pension plan.
