Job Overview:
This position involves conducting an assessment and identifying the carrying capacity of selected dive sites along the Aqaba Marine Reserve in Jordan. The role is crucial for ensuring the sustainable management of marine resources and protecting the biodiversity of the region. The contractor will be expected to analyze environmental data, engage with local stakeholders, and provide recommendations for sustainable practices in the marine tourism sector. The assignment is deliverable-based and is expected to be completed over a period of three months. The contractor will need to demonstrate expertise in marine ecology, environmental science, and sustainable tourism practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the selected dive sites in the Aqaba Marine Reserve, focusing on their ecological health and capacity to support tourism activities.
  • Collect and analyze data on marine biodiversity, visitor numbers, and environmental impacts.
  • Engage with local stakeholders, including dive operators, conservation groups, and government agencies, to gather insights and foster collaboration.
  • Develop a detailed report outlining the findings of the assessment, including recommendations for managing the carrying capacity of the dive sites.
  • Present the findings to UNDP and relevant stakeholders, highlighting key issues and proposed solutions.
  • Ensure that all work is conducted in accordance with UNDP's guidelines and standards for environmental assessments.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in conducting environmental assessments, particularly in marine ecosystems.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of sustainable tourism practices and marine conservation principles.
  • Familiarity with the Aqaba Marine Reserve and its ecological significance is an advantage.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master's degree in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Ecology, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in marine conservation or sustainable tourism will be considered an asset.

Experience:
At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in environmental assessment, marine ecology, or a related field is required. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs in similar roles will be highly regarded.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Arabic is considered an asset, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of the assessment process.

Additional Notes:
This position is a contract-based role for a duration of three months. It is a full-time position, and the contractor will be expected to work closely with UNDP staff and local partners. The compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
