Job Posting Organization: The United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was established in 1997 and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. It is recognized as a global leader in combating illicit drugs and international crime. UNODC operates through 54 regional offices, covering over 150 countries worldwide. The regional office for Western and Central Africa (ROSEN) is situated in Dakar, Senegal, and has been actively working in the region for more than 20 years. Currently, ROSEN oversees 22 countries and has established 13 field offices to enhance its outreach and effectiveness in addressing drug-related issues and crime.
Job Overview: The UN Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Research and Awareness Unit. The primary focus of this position is to support the implementation of various projects aimed at addressing issues such as terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational organized crime. The volunteer will be involved in organizing national and regional workshops, contributing to the development of national strategies, and assisting in the production of research papers on critical topics affecting West and Central Africa. The role also includes supporting field research, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining databases related to drugs and crime in the region. Additionally, the volunteer will engage in communication efforts by drafting press releases, preparing presentations, and coordinating with other UN agencies to promote research initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include:
Project Implementation: Organizing workshops on terrorism, violent extremism, and organized crime; supporting the development of national strategies; contributing to workplans and research methodologies; producing research papers on relevant topics; and assisting with various R&A activities and field missions.
Research: Participating in field research on drugs and crime; collecting and reviewing data from various sources; monitoring news related to irregular migration; creating and maintaining databases; and developing partnerships with UN agencies and research institutions.
Communication: Drafting communication outputs such as press releases and social media posts; preparing presentations for policymakers; coordinating research initiatives with other UN entities; and supporting media events and report launches.
Additional Activities: Engaging in volunteerism activities, promoting the UN Volunteers programme, and contributing to community engagement efforts.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a strong understanding of research methodologies, data analysis, and the ability to communicate findings effectively. Candidates should possess skills in organizing workshops and events, as well as experience in working with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies and NGOs.
