Job Overview:
The Gender and Green Economy Specialist will be responsible for managing and implementing UN Women's regional work programme focused on gender-responsive climate action and women's participation in the green economy in West and Central Africa. This role involves advising countries on strategies to support gender-responsive climate action, ensuring that women are included in the benefits associated with the green transition. The Specialist will report to the Regional Policy Advisor for Women’s Economic Empowerment and will collaborate closely with various stakeholders, including government officials, donors, and civil society, to ensure successful programme implementation. The position requires strong programme formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation skills, as well as the ability to synthesize performance data to inform strategic decision-making.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Gender and Green Economy Specialist include formulating strategies and programmes to support gender-responsive climate action, managing gender and green economy initiatives, and overseeing the technical implementation of projects. The Specialist will be responsible for developing work plans and budgets, managing internal and external reporting, providing guidance on Results Based Management tools, and organizing project review meetings. Additionally, the Specialist will design and deliver capacity-building strategies, provide technical assistance to governments and stakeholders, and lead the production of knowledge products related to gender and climate action. The role also involves mobilizing resources to support gender-responsive climate action and establishing partnerships to advance these initiatives in the region.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, climate change, environmental sciences, or development/public policy. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. The position requires at least 7 years of progressively responsible work experience at the national or international level in the design, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of development projects. Additionally, candidates should have at least 4 years of experience in formulating and implementing projects related to gender and climate change, as well as proven experience in coordinating with government agencies and donors. Experience working in the UN System is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree or equivalent in relevant fields such as economics, climate change, environmental sciences, or development/public policy. Candidates with a first-level university degree may be considered if they have additional qualifying experience.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible work experience in the design, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of development projects. Candidates should have at least 4 years of experience specifically in the areas of gender and climate change, gender and green transition, and climate finance. Experience in strategic planning, policy advice, and working on gender and climate change issues in West and Central Africa is essential. Familiarity with the UN System is advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in both English and French is required for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
