Job Overview:
The Gender Officer will play a crucial role in enhancing gender equality within the context of a project aimed at improving water security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security for smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe. This position involves the implementation of a Gender Action Plan that integrates gender considerations into project activities, ensuring that the needs and challenges faced by women, particularly those from female-headed households, are addressed. The officer will work closely with various stakeholders, including the Project Management Unit (PMU) and responsible partners, to promote gender-responsive practices in agriculture and climate resilience initiatives. The role requires a strong understanding of gender programming and the ability to advocate for women's empowerment in agricultural policies and practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Gender Officer will be responsible for refining and implementing the Gender Action Plan, monitoring its progress, and reporting on gender-related activities. Key duties include conducting gender-based capacity needs assessments, training staff and partners on gender mainstreaming, and ensuring that gender-responsive monitoring and reporting mechanisms are in place. The officer will also support the development of communication strategies that incorporate gender considerations and facilitate participatory training workshops for farmers. Additionally, the Gender Officer will collaborate with various experts to ensure that social and environmental safeguards are integrated into project activities, particularly concerning the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Gender Officer position should possess a strong background in gender studies, social sciences, or a related field. They should have experience in gender programming, particularly in agricultural contexts, and demonstrate a solid understanding of gender analysis and responsive reporting. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling them to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. Familiarity with climate-resilient agriculture and the challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in gender studies, social sciences, development studies, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.

Experience:
The position requires at least 5 years of relevant experience in gender programming, particularly in the context of agriculture and climate resilience. Candidates should have a proven track record of implementing gender action plans and conducting capacity-building initiatives. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs in Zimbabwe or similar contexts is an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Zimbabwe, such as Shona or Ndebele, is considered an asset and would facilitate better communication with local communities.

Additional Notes:
This position is full-time and based in Harare, Zimbabwe. The contract duration is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and funding availability. The Gender Officer will be expected to work collaboratively with national and international partners and may involve travel to project sites within Zimbabwe. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and in line with UNDP salary scales.
