In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

> International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
> Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)
> United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
The main roles of UN Women are:
> To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms.
> To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society.
> To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview: The Deputy Country Representative is a senior management position responsible for the day-to-day operations of the UN Women Country Office in Nigeria. This role involves overseeing the implementation of the country programme, ensuring effective delivery of results in line with UN Women’s Strategic Plan. The incumbent will manage the programme team, provide strategic direction, and represent UN Women in various coordination efforts within the UN system. The position requires a strong focus on gender equality and women's empowerment, particularly in the context of Nigeria's complex humanitarian and security challenges. The Deputy Country Representative will also play a key role in resource mobilization and partnership development to support the organization's initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage the programme team by overseeing the daily operations, finalizing annual work plans, and ensuring effective implementation and monitoring of programmes.
Provide advisory support to the Country Representative on strategic areas and ensure compliance with programme monitoring and evaluation standards.
Represent UN Women in UN system coordination efforts, ensuring collaboration and coherence among UN agencies.
Develop and implement resource mobilization strategies and maintain relationships with government, partners, and stakeholders.
Advocate for UN Women’s mission in various forums and develop public communication strategies.
Facilitate knowledge management and capacity-building initiatives to enhance gender equality efforts.
Manage personnel under supervision, providing guidance and performance feedback.
Perform additional duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the office.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree in international development, public administration, public policy, or relevant social science fields. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A project/programme management certification such as PMP®, PRINCE2®, or MSP® is considered an advantage.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in relevant fields is required, with a first-level university degree acceptable if accompanied by additional qualifying experience. Certifications in project or programme management are beneficial.
Experience: At least 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience in development programmes with a focus on gender equality and women's empowerment is required. Experience within the UN system, particularly in developing countries, is desirable. Candidates should have experience leading and coaching staff in international settings and field-based experience working with multicultural teams.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of another official UN language (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is desirable.
