Job Overview: The Senior Accountant position at FHI 360 is a critical role within the Country Office in Abuja, Nigeria. The incumbent will report directly to the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Deputy Director of Finance and will be responsible for overseeing all accounting functions within the office. This includes ensuring compliance with financial requirements for various programs and projects, managing treasury operations, and maintaining accurate financial records. The Senior Accountant will play a key role in financial reporting, analysis, and compliance, and will be expected to contribute to the overall financial health of the organization. The position requires a proactive approach to financial management, with an emphasis on accuracy, integrity, and adherence to organizational policies and procedures. The Senior Accountant will also support business development activities by assisting in budget development for new programs and modifications, thereby contributing to the organization's mission of improving lives through sustainable solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Accountant will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: overseeing treasury operations and cash management, ensuring accurate records of bank accounts, and serving as the primary contact for banking relationships. The role involves leading payment processing on various platforms, coordinating the review of submitted payments, and maintaining updated payment records. The Senior Accountant will prepare monthly PAYE, WHT, and other statutory remittance schedules, ensuring timely compliance with statutory obligations. Additionally, the incumbent will coordinate the monthly submission of the country office balance sheet, prepare financial reports, and monitor project expenditures. The role also includes retrieving and collating supporting documents for audits, assisting in budget preparation, and overseeing petty cash management. The Senior Accountant will collaborate with team leads to resolve budget issues and perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Senior Accountant position must possess a BS/BA degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a recognized equivalent, along with 5 to 7 years of relevant experience. Alternatively, candidates with an MS/MA degree in the same fields and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience will also be considered. A minimum of 3 to 4 years of experience in accounting related to international development programs is required. Familiarity with DOS funded programs and non-governmental organizations in Nigeria is advantageous. Professional certifications such as CPA, ACA, or ACCA are preferred, and demonstrated success in multicultural environments is a plus. Candidates must exhibit the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the role, including proficiency in accounting software and strong analytical skills.
Educational Background: The educational background required for the Senior Accountant position includes a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Candidates with advanced degrees such as a master's in these areas will be given preference. The educational qualifications should be complemented by relevant professional certifications, which enhance the candidate's expertise in financial management and accounting practices.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have substantial experience in accounting, specifically within the context of international development programs. A minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant experience is expected for those with a bachelor's degree, while candidates with a master's degree should have at least 3 to 5 years of experience.
