In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Civil Society Advisory Group (CSAG) serves as an advisory platform that facilitates structured consultations between civil society and UN Women. The CSAG aims to foster dialogue on gender equality and women's rights, inform UN Women programs with civil society insights, and advocate for women's empowerment. Members of the CSAG will provide strategic advice on thematic and political priorities, analyze socio-economic trends impacting gender equality, and contribute to the effective implementation of the 2030 Development Agenda. The role is crucial in ensuring that diverse voices, especially from marginalized groups, are amplified in discussions surrounding gender equality and women's empowerment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Members of the CSAG will have both advisory and advocacy roles. They will provide strategic advice on UN Women’s thematic and political priorities, including strategic planning, and analyze socio-economic and political trends affecting gender equality and women's rights in Liberia. Members will contribute insights on emerging issues and lessons learned to UN Women’s programs and policies. Additionally, they will strengthen UN Women’s engagement with civil society, advocate for women's rights at national and local levels, and ensure grassroots concerns are reflected in broader discussions. The CSAG will consist of 10-12 members, ensuring inclusivity and representation from various sectors, including grassroots organizations and marginalized communities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate expertise in thematic areas relevant to the CSAG, such as Women’s Political Participation, Women’s Economic Empowerment, Ending Violence Against Women, and Women in Peace and Security Processes. They should possess strong analytical skills, the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, and a commitment to advancing gender equality and women's rights. Experience in advocacy, policy development, or program implementation related to gender issues is essential.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background in gender studies, social sciences, international relations, or a related field is required. Candidates should have a strong understanding of gender equality issues and the socio-political context in Liberia.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in gender equality, women's rights, or related fields. Experience in civil society engagement, advocacy, or policy development is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN Women’s mission and programs will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all meetings and documentation will be conducted in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Liberia is considered an asset, as it may enhance communication with grassroots organizations and communities.

Additional Notes:
The CSAG members will serve a two-year mandate, with the possibility of extending their service for up to three years. Meetings will be convened bi-annually, with additional ad hoc meetings as necessary. UN Women will provide logistical support for meetings, and members will have continuous access to UN Women senior management for discussions on emerging issues. The selection process will involve publishing an Expression of Interest and forming a Selection Committee to review applications.
