Job Overview:
The Principal Advisor position within the EBRD’s Environment and Sustainability Department (ESD) is a critical role that focuses on supporting the Bank's biodiversity requirements and other environmental and social (E&S) standards. The Principal will work closely with the Head of Sector: Extractives and SME, as well as the senior biodiversity advisor, to ensure that ESD staff, clients, and advisors effectively implement the Bank's E&S appraisal and monitoring processes. This role involves contributing to policy and guidance related to biodiversity and nature, and requires a deep understanding of environmental and social risks in high-risk sectors such as extractives, energy, and infrastructure. The Principal will also be responsible for managing complex projects and providing specialist input to various initiatives, ensuring compliance with EBRD's environmental and social requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal Advisor will have a wide range of responsibilities, including: providing specialist input to projects and Technical Cooperation tasks; managing delivery of specific sub-projects or activities; conducting assessments of environmental and social compliance; coordinating project teams and conducting technical reviews; developing methodologies and monitoring outputs; preparing internal and external reports; representing ESD at various meetings and events; supporting capacity building initiatives; mentoring staff; and contributing to the continuous improvement of internal processes. The role requires independent work travel and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, along with a proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks. Knowledge of international environmental and social standards, such as EBRD Environmental and Social Requirements and IFC Performance Standards, is essential. Candidates should also have strong interpersonal skills, effective time management abilities, and the capacity to communicate complex issues to diverse stakeholders. Familiarity with the countries where the EBRD operates is advantageous.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a comparable field is required. Additional professional qualifications or certifications in environmental and social governance may be beneficial.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in project management, particularly in leading multi-disciplinary teams and delivering solutions in complex environments. Experience in negotiating and influencing stakeholders is also important, as is the ability to mentor and coach less experienced staff.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with familiarity in a language of the EBRD countries of operation considered advantageous. For positions based in resident offices, local language fluency may be required.
