Job Overview:
The UN Associate Communications Officer position is located in the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in N'Djamena, Chad. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies that effectively raise awareness and engage target audiences regarding the work of the UN. This role requires a strong understanding of media relations, digital communications, and the ability to create compelling content across various platforms. The officer will contribute to media mapping, relationship building with media outlets, and the planning of press events. The position also involves acting as a spokesperson when necessary and ensuring that communications efforts align with the UN's strategic goals. The role is critical in fostering public support for UN initiatives and enhancing the organization's visibility in Chad.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UN Associate Communications Officer include:
  • Gathering insights and analysis from various media sources to inform communications strategies.
  • Implementing communications strategies that drive engagement and support from target audiences.
  • Drafting narratives and messaging that resonate with audiences across different channels.
  • Mapping media outlets and fostering relationships with traditional and new media.
  • Developing media lines for crisis situations and sensitive issues.
  • Planning and coordinating press conferences, briefings, and media events.
  • Acting as a spokesperson for the organization when required.
  • Creating optimized content for various platforms to reach target audiences.
  • Producing communications products such as press releases, reports, and infographics. 1
  • Developing and implementing communications campaigns with measurable impact. 1
  • Building strategic communications partnerships with stakeholders. 1
  • Engaging in outreach and advocacy strategies to advance UN priorities. 1
  • Creating content for UN and community radio channels and podcasts. 1
  • Updating policy and training related to strategic communications. 1
  • Preparing reports and inputs for governmental bodies. 1
  • Monitoring communications approaches and reporting on their effectiveness. 1
  • Analyzing data trends and providing insights for decision-making. 1
  • Creating engaging content for social media and digital platforms. 1
  • Developing website strategies to enhance engagement. 2
  • Maintaining the organization’s website to ensure it is user-friendly and accessible. 2
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the UN Associate Communications Officer position include:
  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications, or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is an advantage.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Experience managing digital communication platforms, including content production.
  • Knowledge of the media landscape in Chad and experience in media relations.
  • Experience within the UN system or international organizations is desirable.
  • Skills in graphic design, photography, and video production are desirable.
  • Experience in results communication and data visualization is desirable. 1
  • Experience in planning high-visibility events and campaigns is desirable.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Completion of programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing communications strategies. Candidates should have experience managing digital communication platforms, including content production, and possess knowledge of the media landscape in Chad. Experience within the UN system or other international organizations is desirable, as is experience in graphic design, photography, video production, and data visualization.

Languages:
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in both languages is required. Candidates must demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency according to the UN Language Framework, which includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in both languages.

Additional Notes:
This is a fixed-term position with an initial appointment period of one year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The position is open to nationals of Chad, and candidates must be recruited within the country or commuting distance of the office. If no suitable local candidates are found, Chadian nationals residing elsewhere may be considered, with the candidate responsible for relocation costs.
