Job Overview: The Mechanical DesignEngineer position at UNRWA involves carrying out detailed mechanical design work for various building projects, including schools, hospitals, clinics, shelters, warehouses, and rehousing projects. The role requires adherence to the agency's needs, policies, design criteria, standards, and local and international codes of practice. The incumbent will maintain and apply existing standard details of mechanical works using relevant software and will review drawings prepared by Technical Assistants or CAD operators. The engineer will also contribute to the preparation of tender documents related to mechanical works, ensuring that specifications cover special design needs and identifying non-standard items to enhance the quality of implemented works. Additionally, the role involves researching emerging models and technologies to identify new materials and techniques that can lead to better results and meet evolving requirements. The engineer will participate in studies and technical activities that address environmental aspects, including the incorporation of green elements in design and safety needs, to achieve cost-effective and reliable technical solutions. The position also requires providing technical advice and carrying out special design work for alterations to agency premises, writing technical reports on mechanical aspects and building system inspections, and liaising with construction teams on mechanical design issues that arise during implementation. The engineer will update mechanical design drawings to reflect changes based on as-built drawings and maintain these drawings according to relevant technical instructions. Coordination with other designers is essential to optimize designs in response to mechanical needs while ensuring the soundness and integrity of buildings at minimal cost. The engineer will assist in drafting terms of reference for consultants related to mechanical works and supervise their work to ensure compliance with design criteria, standards, and procedures. The role also includes providing substantive input on various types of reports, including weekly and monthly progress reports and ad-hoc reports, and performing other duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct detailed mechanical design for building projects, ensuring compliance with agency needs, policies, design criteria, standards, and codes of practice.
Maintain and apply existing standard details of mechanical works using relevant software.
Review drawings prepared by Technical Assistants/CAD operators.
Contribute to the preparation of tender documents related to mechanical works, including specifications for special design needs.
Identify non-standard items to improve the quality of implemented works and write relevant descriptions for inclusion in the Bill of Quantities (BoQs).
Research emerging models and technologies to identify new materials and techniques for better results.

Required Qualifications:
A university degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university/institution.
At least four years of relevant experience, with a minimum of two years in design, including public buildings and developmental projects.
Experience with mechanical design software and computer-aided design tools, such as AutoCAD and other relevant software.
Good command of written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
Current involvement in outside activities, including employment, independent contracting, board membership, public speaking, teaching, or voluntary work, is required.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a university degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution. This educational background is essential for understanding the principles and practices of mechanical design and engineering.
Experience: Candidates are required to have a minimum of four years of relevant work experience, with at least two years specifically in design roles that involve public buildings and developmental projects. This experience should include proficiency in mechanical design software and computer-aided design tools, such as AutoCAD.
Languages: The mandatory languages for this position are English and Arabic, with a required proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for both languages. Knowledge of French is considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The appointment for this position is a Fixed Term Appointment for one year, with a one-year probation period and the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability. The position is classified at Grade 14, with a monthly basic salary of JD 919.800 fils, plus a Special Occupational Allowance (SoA) of 60% of the basic salary. Other benefits include a monthly Provident Fund contribution (15.4% of basic salary paid by the Agency), compulsory medical insurance, 30 days of annual leave, and a dependency allowance if applicable. Additional benefits include two days of sick leave for each completed month of service, 14 weeks of maternity leave, and two weeks of paternity leave. The incumbent may be required to travel outside the Field in the Area of Operations on duty. Candidates must be residing in Jordan and within commuting distance of the duty station at the time of application. The Agency will not provide relocation costs, and preference will be given to registered Palestine refugees and candidates who assist in achieving gender parity.
