Job Overview: The Regional Industry Director (RID) for the Financial Institutions Group (FIG) is a pivotal leadership role based in Bogotá, Colombia, responsible for overseeing FIG activities across Latin America and the Caribbean. This position demands a high level of leadership, management skills, and technical expertise to effectively guide the regional team. The RID will engage with various sub-sectors, including Banking, Microfinance, Insurance, Capital Markets, Housing, Distressed Assets, and Global Trade Finance. The focus will be on critical themes such as job creation, support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs/SMEs), gender equality, climate initiatives, and other areas, delivering both investment and advisory services to IFC’s clients through its extensive global network. The role also involves managing key relationships with clients and government entities, overseeing operations, and driving the business towards achieving IFC’s strategic objectives. The RID will report directly to the Regional Vice President for Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe, and will be an integral part of the Core Leadership Team for the Regional Vice Presidency.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Regional Industry Director include, but are not limited to:
Business Responsibility: Develop and implement the FIG strategy and priorities in the region in collaboration with Division Directors, Country Managers, and the FIG Management team. Focus on business growth, achieving strong profitability, and ensuring sustainable developmental impact. Lead and expand the overall FIG business in the region, ensuring that origination and portfolio oversight are financially sound, profitable, and impactful. Strategically position the FIG business in Latin America and Europe by developing country strategies in close collaboration with the Regional Vice President and other Industry Regional Directors. Chair Investment Review Meetings and make decisions regarding IFC investments in the region. Oversee Upstream and Advisory engagements for FIG in the region. Contribute to the execution of the FIG regional equity strategy in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Equity, FIG. Partner with IBRD/IDA and MIGA to develop regional sector strategies. Work closely with the Knowledge Bank, Treasury teams, and other WBG partners to create and disseminate knowledge products and best practices, leveraging data and analytics to inform strategy and client engagement.
Client and Stakeholder Responsibility: Design and implement a comprehensive strategy for business development, ensuring proactive client and FIG portfolio management in the region. Represent IFC to key clients and stakeholders, building and maintaining long-term relationships with public sector institutions, multilateral development banks (MDBs), donors, and investors. Collaborate with other World Bank Group entities to identify opportunities for joint ventures, resource mobilization, partnerships, and knowledge transfer that benefit clients.
Resource Responsibility: Supervise FIG Managers and act as Secondary Supervisor or Reviewing Official for other FIG staff in the region. Implement corporate initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and client service.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the Regional Industry Director position should possess a robust set of qualifications, including significant leadership experience in the financial sector, particularly in emerging markets. A deep understanding of the financial institutions landscape, including banking, microfinance, insurance, and capital markets, is essential. The candidate should demonstrate a proven track record of managing complex projects and leading diverse teams. Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills are required, along with the ability to engage effectively with high-level stakeholders and clients. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for building relationships and representing IFC in various forums.
Educational Background: Candidates should hold an advanced degree in finance, economics, business administration, or a related field. A strong academic background is essential, with preference given to those who have additional qualifications or certifications relevant to the financial sector or development finance.
Experience: The position requires extensive experience in the financial sector, with a minimum of 10-15 years of relevant experience, including leadership roles. Experience working in emerging markets and a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in these regions are critical. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex projects, and engage with high-level stakeholders effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable given the regional focus. Knowledge of Portuguese or other languages relevant to the region would be considered an asset.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time role based in Bogotá, Colombia, and is part of the Core Leadership Team for the Regional Vice Presidency.
