Job Overview:

Interns will play a vital role in supporting the department's initiatives by conducting research, preparing written materials, and assisting in the organization of events. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of human rights while working alongside professionals dedicated to promoting democratic values and human rights across OSCE participating States. The internship is set to last for six months, starting in November 2026, with the possibility of changes to the start date. Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities that include conducting desk research and analysis on human rights developments to monitor the implementation of commitments by OSCE participating States. They will assist in preparing written materials such as reports and briefing papers on specific human rights issues or regions. Additionally, interns will help organize meetings, conferences, and workshops related to the department's programs, take notes during events, and contribute to drafting reports summarizing discussions and outcomes. Interns may also be assigned to assist with other projects or tasks as needed, providing a comprehensive experience in the workings of the Human Rights Department.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be students in their final year of higher education or recent graduates within two years of graduation, specializing in fields such as political sciences, international relations, law, or international human rights law. The upper age limit for applicants is set at 30 years. Applicants should be nationals of an OSCE participating State and possess previous exposure or experience in human rights issues, which is considered an asset. Strong command of English, both written and oral, is essential, while knowledge of Russian is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate competence in research and analytical writing, possess organizational and communication skills, and show cultural sensitivity and understanding of gender mainstreaming. Proficiency in Windows applications, including word processing and Microsoft Excel, is also required.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be pursuing or have completed a degree in political sciences, international relations, law, international human rights law, or a related field. This educational background is crucial as it provides the necessary theoretical foundation and understanding of the complexities surrounding human rights issues and international law, which are central to the work of the ODIHR.

Experience:
While prior experience in human rights is beneficial, it is not mandatory. The internship is primarily aimed at students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in the field. However, any previous involvement in human rights advocacy, research, or related activities will be viewed favorably and can enhance a candidate's application.

Languages:
A strong command of English is mandatory for this position, as all written and verbal communications will primarily be conducted in this language. Knowledge of Russian is considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication and understanding of human rights issues in certain regions. Proficiency in additional languages may also be beneficial, depending on the specific tasks assigned during the internship.

  • It is a full-time role, and candidates should be aware that the OSCE does not provide remuneration or cover expenses incurred during the internship. However, some compensation towards living costs will be offered to interns who do not reside in Warsaw, equivalent to 10% of the applicable Daily Subsistence Allowance rate. The selected intern may also participate in a group health insurance scheme at their own expense, while life and accident/disability insurance will be covered by the OSCE. It is important to note that this internship does not guarantee future employment with the organization.
