Job Overview:
The position of National Consultant for updating market profiles in Mauritania involves conducting an analytical study that integrates a systemic analysis of factors influencing market functionality, access to food, and the food and nutritional security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security of households. The consultant will be responsible for updating market profiles in targeted regions, documenting key consumption, assembly, wholesale, livestock, cereal, horticultural, dairy, imported products, and essential non-food markets. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of supply chains, trade flows, and logistical constraints, as well as an analysis of price trends, seasonality, and the economic access of households to food. The consultant will also need to evaluate the role of markets in ensuring food security, particularly for vulnerable populations, and propose operational and strategic recommendations for improving market monitoring and early warning systems. This position is expected to last for approximately three months, starting on September 3, 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will undertake a variety of duties including: updating market profiles in targeted regions of Mauritania; documenting key markets and supply chains; analyzing price trends and market volatility; assessing the economic and physical access of households to food; integrating a systemic approach to examine production, transformation, storage, transport, distribution, consumption, nutrition, and climate adaptation; identifying risks and opportunities for market-sensitive interventions; proposing operational recommendations for market monitoring and local procurement; and strengthening the capacities of national and local actors in data collection and analysis. The consultant will also be responsible for producing various reports and deliverables, including a start-up report, validated data collection tools, interim reports, a cleaned database, and a final report with actionable recommendations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree in Agro-economics, Food Security and Nutrition, Statistics, or a related field. They should demonstrate a solid experience in conducting market studies and food security assessments in Sahelian contexts or comparable environments. The consultant should have expertise in market analysis, food security, nutrition, and livelihoods, as well as quantitative and qualitative methods. Strong analytical skills, particularly in price analysis and market response capacity, are essential. Experience in climate resilience, pastoralism, and resource management is also required, along with skills in data visualization and database management. The ability to facilitate workshops and build capacities is crucial, as is excellent report writing in English.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in a relevant field such as Agro-economics, Food Security and Nutrition, or Statistics is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to conduct comprehensive market analyses and assessments related to food security and nutrition.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of relevant experience is required for this position. The consultant should have a proven track record in conducting market studies and food security assessments, particularly in contexts similar to those found in the Sahel region. Experience in analyzing market dynamics, food security, and nutrition, as well as familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research methods, is essential. The consultant should also have experience in working with local communities and stakeholders to gather data and implement recommendations effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in French is mandatory, and proficiency in Arabic, Hassaniya, Pulaar, Soninké, or other local languages is considered an asset. Strong writing skills in French are also required, as the consultant will need to produce reports and documentation in this language. The ability to communicate effectively in English is also important, particularly for report writing and collaboration with international teams.
