The organization works in coordination with other UN entities based in Tokyo to further promote the gender equality agenda.

Job Overview:
The Communication and Advocacy Analyst position at UN Women Japan Liaison Office is crucial for supporting the implementation of advocacy, outreach, and communications activities aimed at increasing the profile of UN Women in Japan. The role involves working under the direct supervision of the Director of the JLO and in close coordination with UN Women's Communications Division at headquarters. The analyst will be responsible for preparing inputs for advocacy and outreach work planning, engaging diverse stakeholders to advance gender equality and women's empowerment (GEWE) in alignment with UN Women's Strategic Plan and corporate priorities. This includes liaising with relevant UN Women colleagues at various levels, tracking progress on communications and advocacy activities, and drafting and adapting materials for dissemination. The analyst will also support the launch of campaigns and special events, ensuring effective communication and visibility for UN Women’s initiatives in Japan.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Communication and Advocacy Analyst include:
  • Supporting communication and advocacy/outreach activities by preparing inputs for advocacy work planning, liaising with UN Women colleagues, tracking progress, and drafting advocacy materials.
  • Assisting in maintaining and updating media relationships and contact lists, responding to inquiries, monitoring media, and providing logistical support for media events.
  • Supporting advocacy partnerships, particularly with the private sector, by coordinating activities related to the Unstereotype Alliance, HeForShe Initiative, and Women's Empowerment Principles.
  • Performing other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization. This role requires a proactive approach to building relationships and engaging with various stakeholders to promote gender equality initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Communication and Advocacy Analyst position include a master’s degree in communications, media studies, journalism, gender, international relations, international development, marketing, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Candidates should possess strong communication skills, knowledge of media relations, and experience in advocacy or public relations, particularly in relation to gender issues.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a master’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, media studies, journalism, gender, international relations, international development, marketing, or a related area. A bachelor’s degree with additional qualifying experience may also be considered. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of communication and advocacy in the context of gender equality.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required for this position. This experience should be in areas such as journalism, public relations, advocacy, international relations, marketing, development, or digital communications, with a focus on gender issues being particularly advantageous. Familiarity with media relations across various platforms and experience in organizing events or workshops are also beneficial. Previous experience with UN Women or another UN organization is a plus, as is exposure to the Japanese private sector.

Languages:
Fluency in both Japanese and English is required for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is desirable and would enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This position is office-based and does not have supervisory or managerial responsibilities. The role is full-time and involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including government actors, private sector entities, and civil society organizations.
