Job Overview:
The Regional Statistics Specialist will oversee the implementation of the Women Count initiative at the regional level, ensuring that gender statistics are effectively produced and utilized to inform public policies and monitor progress towards gender equality. This role involves providing technical support and capacity development services to UN Women offices and project teams, facilitating knowledge sharing, and advocating for better gender data. The specialist will also manage partnerships with various stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and international agencies, to strengthen the use of gender statistics in the region. The position requires a strategic approach to enhance the quality and comparability of gender statistics and to ensure that these statistics are accessible to users across different sectors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage and oversee the implementation of the Women Count initiative at the regional level, ensuring adherence to quality standards in statistical practices.
  • Identify and undertake necessary programmatic and administrative tasks, including budget preparation and performance reporting.
  • Support the preparation of regional monitoring reports on SDG targets related to gender equality.
  • Provide substantive technical support to establish UN Women’s statistical work in the region.
  • Produce and disseminate templates, guidance notes, and methodologies for monitoring gender-related commitments in the SDGs.
  • Provide technical and policy support to UN Women offices and member states.
  • Organize training sessions to build capacity in gender statistics.
  • Lead a regional community of practice for knowledge sharing on gender statistics.
  • Develop and manage partnerships with key stakeholders to implement the regional FPI. 1
  • Facilitate South-South cooperation on gender statistics. 1
  • Contribute to monitoring and evaluation of the Women Count project, ensuring alignment with UN Women’s strategic objectives. 1
  • Perform other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the office.

Required Qualifications:
  • Excellent knowledge of current policies and practices in gender statistics.
  • Strong understanding of UN technical support modalities at various levels.
  • Proven expertise in writing policy and program documents.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to leverage information technology for optimal office performance.
  • Proven ability to establish good relations with government counterparts and partners.
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, economics, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A project/programme management certification would be an added advantage.

Experience:
At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in statistics, with a focus on gender equality and women's empowerment. Experience working within the UN system is an asset. Proficiency in using office software and web-based management systems is required, with experience in modern ERP systems, preferably Oracle Cloud, being desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of French or Portuguese is an asset, and knowledge of another official UN language (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is desirable.
