Job Overview: The Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) at CERN is responsible for the electrical power-distribution network, which spans from 400 kV to 400/230V, as well as the fibre-optics infrastructure and signal and DC-power cabling for the accelerator complex. As an Electrical Designer within the Electrical Design and Documentation Office (EN-EL-DDO), you will work under the guidance of senior design managers and contribute to several strategic projects at CERN. These projects include the electrical consolidation of the North Area, the SPS LV electrical substations, and the renovation of obsolete medium-voltage protection relays in the LHC. Your role will involve designing low voltage distribution networks, equipment sizing, protection studies, and lighting studies, with the aim of progressively taking on projects of increasing complexity.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary responsibilities will include performing short-circuit calculations, conducting protection coordination and selectivity studies, designing electrical power distribution systems and circuits, preparing calculation reports, lighting studies, and earthing studies. You will also be responsible for producing electrical design drawings, including single-line diagrams, and preparing bills of materials for electrical equipment and installations. Additionally, you will be expected to collaborate with senior designers and contribute to the overall success of the projects you are involved in.
Required Qualifications: To be eligible for this position, you must have a professional background in Electrical Engineering or a related field. You should possess either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is also essential that you have never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. Proven hands-on experience in the design of low voltage distribution networks, short circuit calculations, and selectivity studies is required. Experience in designing lighting systems for buildings and external areas using DIALux, as well as secondary design with E-PLAN or similar software, is beneficial. Familiarity with medium voltage distribution networks is also advantageous.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. The educational background should include comprehensive knowledge of electrical engineering principles, particularly in relation to power systems and distribution networks. A strong foundation in electrical design and relevant software tools is also necessary to succeed in this role.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience for those with a Master's degree, or up to 3 years for those with a PhD. Experience should include practical work in electrical design, particularly in low voltage distribution networks, and familiarity with industry standards and practices. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of successfully completing projects and contributing to team efforts in a collaborative environment.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should be committed to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English is the primary language of communication at CERN.

The job involves working in radiation areas and performing interventions in underground installations, so a valid driving license is required.
