Job Overview:

The internship is full-time and in-person, primarily based in New York City, with a duration of six months starting from August 17, 202
  • Interns will work closely with the NGO Relations, Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC), assisting in connecting the UN with civil society organizations and disseminating information about the UN's activities. This role provides an opportunity to engage with various programs that align with the UN's mission and to contribute to the organization's outreach efforts. Interns will be supervised by the Programme Manager of the Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) and the Communications Officer in the Civil Society Unit, ensuring a supportive learning environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks under supervision, including: screening and reviewing registration applications for High-Level Events supported by NGLS; analyzing and running data for registration statistics; creating infographic reports for events; reviewing and compiling submissions from civil society organizations for inclusion in the Civil Society newsletter; designing social media content and event materials such as flyers and RSVP forms; monitoring and responding to generic office emails; assisting with the NGLS Annual report, event planning, and logistics; providing technical support and taking minutes during meetings; and performing other duties as required. This diverse set of responsibilities will allow interns to develop skills in data analysis, communication, and project management while contributing to the UN's mission.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have a field of study closely related to the internship type they are applying for. Additionally, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. The ability to draft emails, publications, or knowledge of social media posts is also desirable.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in a field relevant to public information, communications, international relations, or a related discipline. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the UN's operations and the role of civil society in global governance.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic experience or involvement in extracurricular activities that showcase their interest in public information, communications, or international relations. This could include volunteer work, internships, or academic projects that align with the responsibilities of the internship.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns must provide their own hardware (computer), software, and internet connection if required to perform the internship remotely. The internship is full-time, requiring interns to work up to five days per week (35 hours).
