Job Overview: The Cooling and Ventilation Engineer will be part of the CERN Engineering department, specifically within the Cooling and Ventilation group. This role involves the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of cooling and ventilation systems for large energy physics accelerators and experiments. The engineer will be responsible for managing projects related to the installation of new systems, upgrading existing systems, and consolidating old systems. The position requires a proactive approach to defining user requirements, conducting feasibility studies, and ensuring the technical coordination of contractors. The engineer will also support operational teams in troubleshooting and improving existing plants, contributing to the development of internal procedures and standardization of technical solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Define and pursue user requirements from main stakeholders.
Conduct feasibility studies and detailed designs of industrial cooling and HVAC systems, including sizing and cost estimates.
Write technical reports and notes documenting project progress and findings.
Prepare technical specifications and relevant documentation, and manage the tendering process up to contract adjudication.
Monitor project progress and report regularly to stakeholders.
Ensure technical coordination and supervision of contractors throughout the project lifecycle.
Oversee cost management and scheduling until the commissioning and formal acceptance of systems.
Collaborate with operation teams to troubleshoot and enhance existing cooling and ventilation plants.
Actively contribute to the improvement of internal procedures and technical standards.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Certification in project management (PMP/PMI) is considered an asset. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong understanding of industrial cooling systems and HVAC installations, along with proven experience in contract and project management.
Educational Background: A Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. Additional certifications in project management are advantageous.
Experience: The position requires demonstrated experience in the design, construction, and testing of industrial cooling systems, as well as initial experience in HVAC installations and their hydraulic components. Proven experience in project management and contract management is essential for success in this role.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being highly desirable. Proficiency in additional languages may be beneficial but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract. The role requires full-time onsite work, with a standard working week of 40 hours. The selected candidate must be prepared for work in radiation areas, underground installations, and may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary. A valid driving license is required, and the candidate must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position.
