International Consultant

Job Overview:
The position of International Consultant at UN Women involves providing technical expertise for the design and implementation of key initiatives within the participatory photography project. This project aims to engage youth groups and women living in rural areas affected by climate change, allowing them to document their experiences through photography. The consultant will be responsible for guiding the photo competition process, leading the design of national photo exhibitions, and providing technical support to participating women groups. The role also includes analyzing data collected through the Photolanguage approach and developing human-interest stories that reflect the experiences of marginalized groups. The consultant will work closely with program teams and national consultants to ensure the successful execution of project activities and contribute to the broader goals of gender equality and women's empowerment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's duties include providing technical support for the photo competition process, leading the design of national photo exhibitions, conducting technical reviews of knowledge products, and engaging with community members to analyze data collected from dialogues. The consultant will also develop concept notes for engaging university leaders and students, facilitate capacity-building activities for partner organizations, and strengthen peer networks among women and male students. Additionally, the consultant will draft findings from community dialogues, produce human-interest stories, and ensure that all activities align with ethical standards and project guidelines. The consultant will be expected to participate in meetings, consultations, and other assignments related to participatory photography and knowledge dissemination as requested by UN Women.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent in photography, media, or a relevant discipline. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. The consultant should have a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible work experience in participatory photography, including practice, teaching, and analysis. Experience in engaging marginalized communities in photography and knowledge of Cambodia's social and cultural context related to gender equality is highly desirable. Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree or equivalent in photography, media, or a relevant discipline is required for this position. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. The educational background should support the consultant's ability to engage in participatory photography and visual storytelling effectively.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible work experience in participatory photography, with at least two years of experience in teaching or training in photography or visual storytelling. Experience in working with marginalized communities and understanding the cultural context of Southeast Asia, particularly Cambodia, is advantageous. Proven experience in collaborating with development practitioners, including civil society organizations and UN agencies, is also necessary.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within UN Women. Knowledge of the Khmer language would be an advantage, as it would facilitate better engagement with local communities and stakeholders.

This consultancy is home-based and is estimated to require a maximum of 100 days from the first week of August 2026 to December 31, 202

• The consultant may need to travel to Cambodia for a maximum of two trips, with UN Women covering accommodation and travel expenses incurred during the assignment. The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, which allows for direct engagement based on need and availability. Payment will be made monthly, based on the number of days worked, and will occur 10 days after the submission of the monthly claim. The consultant is expected to bring their own personal computer for the assignment and will have a workstation provided by UN Women.
