Job Overview:
In this role, the Senior Officer will be pivotal in providing the technical expertise necessary for the development and implementation of the Foundation's AI policy. This involves translating advancements in AI technology, governance, and industry practices into actionable insights for the Policy & Advocacy team. The position requires a deep understanding of the technology sector, including the dynamics and stakeholders involved in the development, deployment, and governance of AI systems. The Senior Officer will work closely with the senior program officer for AI and data infrastructure to ensure that the team’s policy perspectives are grounded in the realities of AI technology and governance. The role also involves synthesizing complex technical and regulatory contexts to identify strategic implications for the Foundation's work, developing analytical products, and advising program strategy teams on the technology policy landscape as it relates to AI-enabled tools.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Officer will serve as the internal resource on AI safety, governance, regulation, and technology policy. Responsibilities include monitoring and advising on developments across federal agencies and the technology sector, analyzing emerging governance frameworks and regulatory proposals, and translating their implications for students and educators. The officer will develop analytical products and briefings for the Policy & Advocacy team, advise program strategy teams on technology policy, identify relevant AI governance convenings, and support engagement with technology sector partners and federal agencies. Additionally, the officer will help cultivate relationships with stakeholders across various sectors, communicate complex developments clearly, and support an inclusive culture within the organization.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree or equivalent experience in technology policy, AI governance, or a closely related field. Significant experience in these areas is required, along with mastery-level knowledge of the AI governance landscape, including federal and state regulatory activities and industry self-regulatory frameworks. The ability to translate complex technical and regulatory developments into clear analysis for diverse audiences is essential, as are excellent written and verbal communication skills. Candidates should be comfortable operating in a policy environment that spans different political contexts and have a track record of building durable relationships. Strong analytical and research skills are also necessary, as is intellectual curiosity about education and a commitment to learning quickly in new domains.
