Job Overview: The Associate position within the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at EBRD is a pivotal role that supports the bank's mission to foster sustainable market economies. The OGC is responsible for all legal aspects of EBRD's lending and investment transactions, providing legal advice on institutional matters, and aiding in policy development through its legal transition program. The Associate will contribute their legal expertise, country knowledge, and language skills to facilitate the bank's operations, particularly in Ukraine and Moldova. This role is expected to be based in Kyiv, which is anticipated to become one of EBRD's Regional Client Delivery Hubs, covering operations in the region. The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract for three years, providing a unique opportunity to engage in significant legal work that impacts the development of the private sector in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate will be integrated into the OGC’s Banking Operations group, which is responsible for managing the legal dimensions of EBRD’s lending and investment activities. Key responsibilities include conducting legal research, drafting and negotiating legal documentation, and providing legal advice on various transactions. The Associate will also be expected to monitor ongoing projects, manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines, and collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure compliance with legal standards. Additionally, the role involves supporting the development of legal frameworks that facilitate EBRD's operations in its member countries, thereby contributing to the bank's overarching goals of economic development and sustainability.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a law degree from a reputable university, with a preference for those holding a (post-)graduate degree. A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant legal experience is required, ideally in private practice or within an in-house legal team. Familiarity with the legal practices relevant to EBRD’s operations is essential, including experience in conducting legal research and drafting legal documents. Experience working in multiple jurisdictions is advantageous, as is professional experience gained in EBRD’s countries of operation. Candidates should demonstrate strong project management skills, the ability to prioritize tasks effectively, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Educational Background: A law degree is mandatory, with a preference for candidates who have also obtained a (post-)graduate degree in law or a related field. The educational background should reflect a strong foundation in legal principles and practices, particularly those relevant to international finance and development.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have between 3 to 5 years of professional experience as a lawyer. This experience should ideally encompass work in both private legal practice and in-house legal teams, ensuring that candidates are well-versed in the legal frameworks applicable to EBRD’s operations. Experience in the region or in other EBRD countries is considered an asset, as is legal work experience across multiple jurisdictions.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Candidates who are fluent in one or more of the key languages relevant to EBRD’s countries of operation will have a competitive advantage. Proficiency in additional languages can enhance communication and effectiveness in the role.
