Job Overview:
The Outreach Communications Assistant will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility and engagement of UNU’s Japan Outreach initiatives through effective digital and social media strategies. This position is based in the Office of Communications at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo, which supports the Rector in communicating UNU’s work and engaging with key stakeholders. The Assistant will be responsible for managing the development, editing, and posting of content for UNU's Japanese social media accounts, as well as creating and disseminating website content in Japanese. The role also involves brainstorming and implementing social media strategies to increase followership and engagement, assisting in the organization of outreach events, and supporting the translation and editing of materials between English and Japanese. The successful candidate will contribute to building communication products in Japanese and support various other communications-related tasks as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage the visibility and interest of UNU’s Japan Outreach through digital and social media by developing, editing, and posting original and translated content for UNU's Japanese social media accounts.
  • Develop and disseminate website content in Japanese for various UNU projects, publications, events, and activities.
  • Brainstorm and draft social media strategies and campaigns aimed at increasing followership and engagement.
  • Model social media best practices for the broader UNU system and utilize media monitoring tools to measure and report on the efficacy of social media efforts.
  • Assist in organizing online and in-person events related to Japan Outreach, managing logistics, and promoting activities to reach a wider audience.
  • Support the translation of English materials into Japanese and assist in editing and proofreading Japanese content.
  • Compile and manage translations for the UNU quarterly Japanese e-newsletter, the UNU Annual Report, and other editorial products.
  • Support other Office of Communications work, including marketing, dissemination, content syndication, and media relations, and perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
  • Education: A high school diploma or a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Graphic Design, Applied Languages, Digital Marketing, or a related discipline.
  • Skills and Experience: A high school diploma with two years of relevant working experience in communications or social media. Exemplary reading, speaking, and writing skills in both Japanese and English. Experience with social media monitoring tools and demonstrated ability to create engaging social content for various platforms and audiences. Experience working in teams and in a multicultural context is essential. The candidate should possess dynamism, drive, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess either a high school diploma or a Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as Communications, Journalism, Graphic Design, Applied Languages, Digital Marketing, or a related discipline. This educational background is essential to ensure the candidate has the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for effective communication and outreach.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant working experience in communications or social media. Candidates should have a proven track record of creating engaging content and managing social media platforms, as well as experience in a multicultural work environment. The ability to work collaboratively in teams and demonstrate initiative is crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in both English and Japanese is mandatory for this position. Candidates must be able to read, write, and speak both languages proficiently to effectively communicate and translate materials. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
The successful candidate will be employed under a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract with UNU, which offers an attractive compensation package including an annual net salary ranging from JPY 4,324,000 to JPY 4,932,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits include 30 days of annual leave and a health insurance scheme. The initial contract duration is one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and organizational needs. The maximum duration on a PSA contract with UNU is six years, and the mandatory retirement age for PSA holders is 65 years. The starting date for this position is October 202
