Job Overview: The primary function of the National Consultant/Interpretation position is to provide simultaneous interpretation and written translation services from Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia and/or Portuguese to English, and vice versa. This role is crucial for facilitating communication during events organized by UN Women and its partners, ensuring that all participants can engage effectively regardless of their language proficiency. The consultant will be expected to deliver high-quality translations and interpretations in a timely manner, reflecting the nuances of the source languages while maintaining clarity and accuracy in English. The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Country Representative and National Programme Officer(s), contributing to the overall mission of UN Women in Timor-Leste.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will undertake the following key responsibilities:
Provide accurate content translation from Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia and/or Portuguese to English and vice versa, ensuring that the final translations meet the quality standards set by UN Women.
Submit all translations promptly to the designated UN Women representatives, maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail.
Deliver quality simultaneous interpretation services during various events, ensuring effective communication between speakers and participants.
Ensure that all interpretations are fluent and easily understandable, adapting to the context and audience as necessary.
Manage the logistics of translation and interpretation tasks, including preparation and review of materials prior to events.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions and communications related to the assignment.
Provide feedback and suggestions for improving the translation and interpretation processes within UN Women.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate must possess the following qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory; a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
At least 2 years of proven experience in translation and interpretation, particularly in a professional setting.
Demonstrated experience working with government institutions or international organizations, especially the United Nations, is highly advantageous.
Excellent spoken and written communication skills in Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia/Portuguese and English are essential.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively under tight deadlines.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold at least a high school diploma or its equivalent. A Bachelor’s degree in languages, communication, international relations, or a related field would be considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's profile for this consultancy role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in translation and interpretation. Candidates should have a track record of working in professional environments, particularly with governmental or international organizations, which would provide valuable context and understanding of the nuances involved in such roles.
Languages: Fluency in Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia/Portuguese and English is mandatory for this position. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills in both spoken and written forms. Knowledge of additional languages would be considered a plus, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader audience.
Additional Notes: The consultancy assignment is set for a duration from 15 July 2026 to 14 July 2028, under a retainer contract that allows for direct engagement based on need and availability. The consultant will be responsible for their transportation costs within Dili, while UN Women will cover transportation and daily subsistence allowances for work-related travel outside Dili. Performance will be evaluated based on timeliness, responsibility, initiative, communication, accuracy, and quality of deliverables.
