Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is situated within the Aeronautical Meteorology/Environment section of the ICAO Eastern and Southern Africa (ESAF) Regional Office. The primary focus of this internship is to support the implementation of ICAO’s environmental protection and climate change objectives specifically in the ESAF Region. The intern will play a crucial role in advancing regional initiatives aimed at reducing international aviation emissions, enhancing State capacity, and promoting innovation in sustainable aviation solutions. This position offers hands-on exposure to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) development, State Action Plans (SAPs) on CO₂ emissions reduction, and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The intern will also engage in activities related to cleaner energy transitions and environmental innovations relevant to the African aviation context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for supporting various initiatives under the ICAO environmental, climate, and cleaner energy programmes. Key responsibilities include:

• Supporting regional Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) activities under the ACT-SAF Programme, including policy development, feasibility assessments, and awareness-raising initiatives.
• Assisting with the development and updating of State Action Plans (SAPs) on CO₂ emissions reduction from international aviation.
• Supporting the implementation of CORSIA, including activities related to its Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system and associated capacity-building initiatives.
• Contributing to work on emerging cleaner aviation energy solutions, such as hydrogen, electric, and hybrid aircraft concepts, as well as airport decarbonisation and operational efficiency improvements.
• Supporting regional environmental research and the dissemination of best practices, innovation pathways, and partnerships relevant to sustainable aviation in Africa.
• Assisting in organizing workshops and meetings, preparing technical documents, and coordinating with States, industry stakeholders, and regional partners.
• Supporting the preparation of ICAO inputs and documentation for activities and events of other regional organizations to enhance recognition of ICAO’s leadership in addressing aviation’s environmental impacts.
• Developing outreach and communication materials related to ICAO’s work on aviation and the environment.
• Performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a degree programme (first-level university degree or higher) in a field of study related to aviation, environmental science, climate or atmospheric sciences, renewable or cleaner energy, or other closely related technical disciplines. While no prior work experience is required, applicants should possess academic training, education, advanced coursework, or relevant skills that would benefit the ICAO ESAF Region during the internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a degree programme related to aviation, environmental science, climate or atmospheric sciences, renewable or cleaner energy, or other closely related technical disciplines. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of environmental issues in aviation and contributing effectively to ICAO’s initiatives.

Experience:
No prior work experience is required to apply for the internship programme. However, relevant academic training, education, and skills are expected to be beneficial during the internship. This allows candidates from various educational backgrounds to apply, provided they can demonstrate their knowledge and interest in the field.

Languages:
Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English are essential for this position. A working knowledge of a second language of the Organization, such as French, is desirable and would enhance the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the organization and with its stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
Interns will receive a stipend, but all costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern. The internship duration is six months, and interns are expected to work five days a week on a full-time basis. During the internship, interns are not eligible to engage in any other form of employment within ICAO. They are required to carry out their duties with loyalty, discretion, and conscience, adhering to the official instructions issued by the Organization.
