Job Overview: The Senior Reviser (French) position is situated within the translation" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">French Translation and Text-Processing Unit of the Translation and Editorial Section at UNON. The incumbent will be responsible for revising translations and original summary records that cover a wide range of subjects pertinent to the United Nations, particularly those that are sensitive, complex, or technical in nature. The role demands not only the ability to meet and exceed workload standards and deadlines but also to provide constructive feedback to help translators and précis-writers develop their skills. The position requires a proactive approach to learning and professional development, as well as the ability to coordinate and supervise the work of other revisers and translators. The Senior Reviser will also engage in quality control of translations, assist in the selection of texts for competitive examinations, and contribute to the management of policy and operational matters within the section.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Reviser (French) include revising translations and summary records, translating texts on a self-revising basis, drafting and revising summary records, utilizing language technologies and tools, directing terminology identification, contributing to staff development through coaching and training, coordinating the work of revisers and translators, performing quality control on translations, advising on competitive examination texts, managing policy and operational matters, undertaking cross-assignments, leading data collection and analysis efforts, serving as First Reporting Officer, and acting as Officer-in-Charge in the Chief's absence. The role also involves preparing data presentations and reports, ensuring effective communication and collaboration within the team, and performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high level of professionalism, demonstrating accuracy, consistency, and fidelity to the original text when translating documents. Excellent writing skills are essential, along with the ability to exceed workload standards. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects relevant to the UN, including political, social, legal, economic, and scientific topics, is required. Candidates should exhibit strong analytical skills, familiarity with terminological research techniques, and the ability to provide constructive feedback to enhance the skills of translators and revisers. A commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work is also necessary.
Educational Background: A first-level university degree or equivalent is required for this position. A Master's degree is desirable, along with successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science. Candidates must also have completed the United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters, and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading, or related fields. Experience with standard computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools is required, along with eight years of work experience in a multilingual setting. At least four years of revision experience within an international organization or the UN system is necessary, and managerial experience is desirable. Additionally, two or more years of experience in data analytics or related areas is preferred.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French, both of which are required for this position. Knowledge of either Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish, or Russian is desirable. Candidates must meet the minimum required level for each skill in these languages as per the UN Language Framework.
