Job Overview:
The Senior Security Officer will be responsible for providing senior-level security coordination and advisory support to the ESAMCO (Emergency Security and Management Coordination Office). This role is critical in enabling effective program delivery and informed management decisions. The officer will ensure the consistent application of UNSMS requirements across the office’s area of responsibility. This includes assessing security risks, developing security plans, and implementing security measures to protect personnel and assets. The position requires a proactive approach to security management, ensuring that all staff are aware of security protocols and that the organization is prepared for any potential security incidents.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct regular security assessments and risk analysis to identify potential threats to personnel and operations.
  • Develop and implement security plans and procedures in accordance with UNSMS requirements.
  • Provide security briefings and training to staff to ensure awareness of security protocols.
  • Liaise with local authorities and security agencies to enhance security measures and response capabilities.
  • Monitor and report on the security situation in the area of responsibility, providing timely updates to management.
  • Coordinate the response to security incidents, ensuring that appropriate actions are taken to mitigate risks.
  • Maintain accurate records of security incidents and responses, and prepare reports as required.
  • Collaborate with other UN agencies and organizations to share information and best practices in security management.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in security management, preferably within a UN or international organization.
  • Strong understanding of security protocols and risk management principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in security-related software and tools.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree in security management, international relations, or a related field is required. A master’s degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an advantage.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in security management or related fields is required. Experience in a UN or international organization is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of successfully managing security operations and responding to security incidents.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly French or Arabic, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This position is classified as mid-level and falls under the LICA 9 contract level. The contract is open-ended, subject to organizational requirements, availability of funds, and satisfactory performance. The role is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and may involve travel to other locations as required.
